Panthers Spoil Women’s Soccer Season Opener

9/4/2014 4:44:00 PM

Box Score Garden City, N.Y. - (9/4/2014) – In today's season opener, the Chestnut Hill College women's soccer team held off host Adelphi University into the second half, but an own goal and three late strikes from the Panthers dealt the Griffins a 4-0 defeat. Senior goalkeeper Samantha Pauls (South Plainfield, N.J.) made a career-high 17 saves, but could not keep the dam from breaking as the hosts compiled a 43-2 shot advantage.

Despite the Adelphi University (1-0) onslaught, Chestnut Hill College (0-1) managed to keep a clean sheet until a bad break ended the stalemate. At the 56:33 mark, a cross deflected off a Griffin player and bounced into the net to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Sophomore forward Laura Gomez (Deer Park, N.Y.) doubled the advantage on a header at 72:56, starting a stretch of three scores in less than 10 minutes that put the contest out of reach for the Griffins. Less than two minutes later, Panthers sophomore midfielder Victoria Antonino (Howard Beach, N.Y.) made it 3-0 on a top-shelf strike at 74:28, and just eight minutes later (82:12), junior midfielder Kelsey Malles (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) provided the final margin.

Junior midfielder Danielle Spinuzza (Williamstown, N.J.) and freshman forward Morgan Ruth (Blackwood, N.J.) accounted for the only shots of the afternoon for the Griffins. Spinuzza nearly gave the Griffins a lead midway through the first half, intercepting an errant pass by the Panthers deep in their own zone before missing wide.

The women's soccer team plays its next contest on Wednesday, September 10, at Georgian Court University in a 3:30 p.m. Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener.
