Lady Rams Escape Spinuzza’s Blasts, Hang on to Edge Griffins in Season Finale

10/30/2015 8:20:00 PM

Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. - (10/30/2015) – Senior midfielder Danielle Spinuzza (Williamstown, N.J.) twice came within inches of a free-kick goal, and the near misses relegated Chestnut Hill College to a 1-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) defeat at the hands of Philadelphia University in tonight's season finale.

Philadelphia University (8-8-1, 7-4-1), which will be the No. 6 seed in next week's CACC Championship Tournament, controlled the run of play for much of the first half. Their persistence paid off just past the midway point of the period, as senior midfielder Carla Chmielewski (Glassboro, N.J.) took a touch off a centering pass into the box from sophomore midfielder McKenna Burns (Medford, N.J.) and fired a rocket past Chestnut Hill College (4-10-2, 2-8-2) senior keeper Kayla Reno (Pasadena, Md.), putting the Lady Rams in front, 1-0, at 23:38.

The Griffins slowly found a foothold after intermission, and Spinuzza nearly put them on level ground twice in a span of less than three-minutes. First, her high-arching free kick was palmed down by Lady Ram senior goaltender Courtney Shaw (Langhorne, Pa.), who fell backwards but managed to hang on and keep the ball from crossing the line at 66:03. Spinuzza had another opportunity at 68:54, but her well-struck blast from the left side rang off the crossbar, and Philadelphia University managed to escape unscathed. The Scarlet and Gold failed to register a shot as the final 21 minutes and change ran off the clock.

Chmielewski and sophomore midfielder Alex Reyes (Vineland, N.J.) logged five shots apiece for the Lady Rams, while senior forward Angela Ferro (Shelton, Conn.) finished with four as the visitors enjoyed a 21-7 shot surplus. Shaw collected a pair of saves and was aided by the woodwork in improving to 5-6-1 on the season.

Spinuzza's two shots paced the Griffins, with fellow senior midfielder Victoria Fedora (East McKeesport, Pa.) joining sophomore forwards Kylee Jazikoff (Brick, N.J) and Morgan Ruth (Blackwood, N.J.) and freshman midfielders Marikate O'Toole (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Brianna Ferrell (Pasco, Wash.) with one shot. Reno finished with nine saves in her final contest.

Chestnut Hill College finishes the 2015 campaign at 4-10-2 overall and 2-8-2 in CACC play.
