Box Score Wilmington, Del. - (9/15/2015) – An early strike from sophomore forward
Morgan Ruth (Blackwood, N.J.) (15:20) pulled the Chestnut Hill College women's soccer team into a 1-1 deadlock in this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) tilt at Goldey-Beacom College. The Griffins managed just one shot attempt after that, however, while the Lightning tacked on a pair of second-half markers to clinch a 3-1 result and deny the scarlet and gold a fourth straight victory.
Each side needed just two shots to dent the scoreboard. Goldey-Beacom College (1-2, 1-0) drew first blood just 6:44 after the opening kickoff, when senior midfielder Megan Harvis (Delran, N.J.) took a touch inside the box and deked her way past Griffins senior goalkeeper
Kayla Reno (Pasadena, Md.) for an early 1-0 advantage. Chestnut Hill College (3-2, 1-1) equalized at the 15:20 mark as sophomore forward
Morgan Ruth (Blackwood, N.J.) gained possession about 25 yards out and one-timed a long blast inside the left post for her second goal of the season and a 1-1 tie.
Though the quick-strike tallies seemed to portend a high-scoring affair, the early excitement fizzled quickly. The first half – and much of the remainder of the game – was contested in the midfield, with the host Lightning accounting for three of the teams' five combined shots; after the 18:54 mark, neither team attempted one for the rest of the half. The stagnation continued until the Griffins blocked a Goldey-Beacom College effort at 51:06, ending a stretch of more than 33 minutes without a shot.
The action resumed in earnest at the 55:05 mark, when Lightning sophomore midfielder Amy Runciman (Luton, England) broke the stalemate with a 20-yard shot that snuck inside the right post, giving the home side a 2-1 advantage.
Shortly thereafter, Chestnut Hill College took its turn as the aggressor, earning its first corner kick just 20 seconds later. Freshman midfielder
Brianna Ferrell (Newtown Square, Pa.), the reigning CACC Rookie of the Week, then sent a header just high at 56:14. Goldey-Beacom College nearly doubled its margin, but a 65
th-minute shot (64:07) by sophomore midfielder Halle Thomas (Mantua, N.J.) rang the crossbar, keeping the Griffins' hopes alive. But a pair of corner kicks proved fruitless, and Chestnut Hill College was unable to fire off a shot after Ferrell's header.
The Griffins overcame a late deficit in last Saturday's 3-2, overtime conquest at Concordia College (NY), but ran out of magic this time. The Lightning struck for an insurance tally at 87:07, junior defender Becca Cordo (Roosevelt, N.J.) tucking a 15-yard shot into the top right corner of the net to provide the final blow.
Runciman, Harvis, and sophomore forward Kelsey Vick (Clarksboro, N.J.), who assisted on Harvis' opening salvo, each took two shots for the Lightning, who finished with just eight for the match. Junior goalkeeper Cindell Aguirre (El Paso, Texas) was credited with the win (1-2) despite not making a save.
In addition to Ruth and Ferrell, sophomore forward
Kylee Jazikoff (Brick, N.J.) attempted the Griffins' third shot of the afternoon. Reno stopped a pair of shots in taking the loss (3-2).
Chestnut Hill College remains on the road for another CACC showdown on Saturday, September 19, at Post University. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
