Newark, Del. – (10/30/2018) – As the #8 seed in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Soccer Championship Tournament field, Chestnut Hill College traveled to #1 Wilmington University for this afternoon's Opening Round (Quarterfinal) playoff. The Wildcats netted a late first half header to take a 1-0 (43:21) edge into halftime. Soon after, a pair of insurance goals (52:35, 58:18) gave Wilmington University the separating they needed for a 3-0 victory. Four Griffins, including junior midfielder
Pedro Dutra (Passos, Brazil), who sailed the initial shot of the affair wide left of the Wildcat goal. Wilmington University advances to the CACC Men's Soccer Semifinals for an 11:00 a.m. contest opposite #4 Jefferson on Friday, November 2, at Post University's LaMoy Field.
Dutra opening missile was one of three first half shot attempts for Chestnut Hill College (7-12), who kept the opening 45 minutes competitive. After the Griffins' initial shot, Wilmington University (13-1-4) offered the contest's next four shots, but came away empty handed. Junior defenseman
Paris Bruhn (Horst Holstein, Germany) propelled his only attempt high of the Wildcat goal at 23:34 and exactly three minutes late (26:34) a strike from senior midfielder
Tyler Johnson (Howell, N.J.) was blocked from reaching its target. Wilmington University's late first half goal was a product of a corner kick opportunity at 43:16. The serve from junior forward Tom Garratt (Kingswinford, England) was well-played to the oncoming head of senior defenseman Daniel Loyo (Caracas, Venezuela) and scored just second later, 1-0 (43:21).
Wilmington University used their momentum to add a pair of insurance goals early in the second half; the first of which came at 52:35 on a Garratt cross that was successfully completed by junior forward Fredrik Bentdal (Lillehammer, Norway) and the second came courtesy of Garratt himself as he rebounded an initial strike from sophomore midfielder Ben Jordan (London, England) at 58:18, 3-0. Chestnut Hill College took six shots after the Garratt tally, but was unable to break the Wildcat defense before the latter 45 minutes expired.
Wildcat senior goalkeeper Vinny Tasca (Audubon, Pa.) made two saves in the win (13-1-4), while Griffin sophomore goalkeeper
Sergio Hernandez (Ossining, N.Y.) totaled seven saves in the loss (4-8).
Chestnut Hill College finishes 2018 at 7-12 overall. The Griffins earned the #8 seed in the CACC Men's Soccer Championship Tournament with a 6-6 league standing.
