Griffins Overcome Lions With Late Second-Half Winner

Lafayette Hill, Pa. - (11/8/2019) – Chestnut Hill College capped off its season with a 2-1 win over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) tournament-bound Georgian Court University on Friday night. Sophomore midfielder David Cortez (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) blasted home the game winner late in the second half to earn the Griffins an impressive victory.

The Griffins got off to a fast start with senior defender Paris Bruhn (Horst Holstein, Germany) delivering a corner kick far post to set up senior midfielder Mo Ehmer (Staines England) with a tap in for a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute. The Lions (8-10, 7-5) would not go away, though, equalizing just before the half off the boot of junior midfielder Louis Silva (Union, N.J.). Both teams had chances in the second half, but it was Chestnut Hill College that capitalized. Junior forward Andrew Thompson (Atlantic City, N.J.) found Cortez outside the box, and he fired a bullet into the bottom left corner to make it 2-1 in the 75th minute.

Georgian Court's goal scorer Silva led the team's offense with five shots and two on target. Junior goalkeeper Jamie Hickey (Dublin, Ireland) made four saves in his team's loss.

Thompson's first point of the season came at a critical juncture with his assist on the game winner. The Griffins took 12 shots, six of which were on target. Bruhn, junior forward Miguel Marra (Ossinging, N.Y.), freshman midfielder Cesar May Casteneda (Exton, Pa.), and freshman forward Luciano Torres (Tucuman, Argentina) were the team leaders with two shots each. Senior goalkeeper Frank Maniscalco (Philadelphia. Pa.) made five saves, including a clutch diving save in the second half to keep the game deadlocked.

The Griffins finish the slate with two wins in their last three games for a 5-9-3 record, including a 4-6-2 mark in CACC play.
