West Chester, Pa. – (3/20/2019) – West Chester University used late runs in game one and early runs in game two to defeat Chestnut Hill College on both ends – 7-1 and 7-2 - of today's doubleheader. Junior shortstop
Alessandra Messina (Ambler, Pa.) was 3-for-7 in the twin bill. She and senior designated player
Kaya Swanek (Pittston, Pa.) each had two hits in game one, but it was freshman first baseman
Lily Reid (Texas City, Texas) who knocked in the only Scarlet and Gold run with a fifth-inning sacrifice fly.
West Chester University (15-10) recorded the first hit of the opener in second inning. Then, Chestnut Hill College (6-10) squandered a third-inning leadoff single from senior right fielder
Alex Sauer (New Milford, N.J.) and a Golden Ram error with a few fielders' choices. Unfortunately, West Chester University grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the frame. The Griffins got it back in the fifth inning with a leadoff single to left from Swanek, another single to left from junior second baseman
Cailey Stevenson (Burbank, Calif.), a walk to freshman third baseman
Victoria Grillo (Staten Island, N.Y.), a fielder's choice, and a Reid sacrifice fly, 1-1, only for the Golden Rams to scored twice in the bottom of the frame, 3-1. After that, the home team outscored the Griffins 4-1 in the sixth inning to capture 7-2 victory. Messina (2-for-4) and Swanek (2-for-3) had two hits apiece, while senior left fielder
Ariel Magee (North Cape May, N.J.) and Stevenson accounted for the Scarlet and Gold runs.
The Golden Rams carried the momentum into game two, scoring five runs in the first two innings, 5-0. The Griffins broke the shutout in the top of the fifth inning with a leadoff home run from freshman centerfielder
Devon Horner (Mt. Laurel, N.J.), 5-1. But West Chester University responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame, 7-1, and allowed only a sixth-inning Messina single before game's end. Senior right fielder
Hunter Irvin (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) and Magee were responsible for the other two Chestnut Hill College hits.
Chestnut Hill College resumes their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule on Saturday, March 23, when they visit Caldwell University for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
