Wise Dominates Wolverines, Griffins Open Season with 5-0 Victory

North Myrtle Beach, S.C. – (3/3/2019) – After a postponing of their first game at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Chestnut Hill College captured a 5-0 victory over the University of Michigan Dearborn. Junior pitcher Kaley Wise (Hamilton, N.J.) was dominate, striking out five of the first six Wolverines she faced and allowing just three hits in her first win (1-0) for the Scarlet and Gold. Meanwhile, the Griffins were patient at the plate, scoring a three second-inning runs with a pair of bases-loaded walks and a wild pitch, 3-0, before a fourth-inning sacrifice fly from junior shortstop Alessandra Messina (Ambler, Pa.), 4-0, and a sixth-inning single to left field from senior left fielder Ariel Magee (North Cape May, N.J.) put the contest out of the Wolverines' reach.

Senior right fielder Alex Sauer (New Milford, N.J.) got Chestnut Hill College (1-0) started with a one-out single to centerfield. Senior first baseman Kaya Swanek (Pittston, Pa.) followed with a single to right field and was replaced by senior pinch runner Jordan Clark (Greenwood, Del.) before junior second baseman Cailey Stevenson (Burbank, Calif.) loaded the bases with a walk. The University of Michigan Dearborn then changed pitchers, but did not benefit from the move as back-to-back walks to senior third baseman Lily Winn (Los Angeles, Calif.) and freshman designated player Victoria Grillo (Staten Island, N.Y.) plated the Scarlet and Gold's first two runs of the affair, 2-0. After a fielder's choice, Winn reached home on a wild pitch to push the Griffin advantage to 3-0.

Chestnut Hill College improved their position in fourth inning, taking advantage of a one-out single to left field from Winn, a walk to Grillo, a single to third base from Magee, with a sacrifice fly from Messina, 4-0. In the sixth inning, Winn got the chain moving again, singling to centerfield, advancing to second base on a wild pitch, and stealing third base, before a Magee single to left field, 5-0.

That was more than enough support for Wise, who struck out eight Wolverines en route to victory. At the top of the lineup, Winn was 2-for-3 with three runs and a run-batted-in (RBI). Magee was also 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Chestnut Hill College continues their time at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic tomorrow, Monday, March 4, with games versus Penn State Schuykill (9:30 a.m.) and Union College (Ky.) (11:30 a.m.).
