Lafayette Hill, Pa. – (4/17/2019) – Sophomore
Kaley Wise (Hamilton, N.J.) was dominant in her ninth win (9-7) of the season, scattering five Dominican College hits and walking three, while striking out four in a complete game shutout, 2-0. She helped herself with a run-scoring single in the second inning and benefitted from a second-inning sacrifice fly from senior catcher
Brielle Riotte (Elizabeth. N.J.). The second game of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader was tight as well, but this time the Chargers defeated Chestnut Hill College, 2-1, thanks to a one-out, walk-off single from senior catcher Emily Luzetsky (Bel Air, Md.).
Dominican College (18-17, 13-7) scored first in game two, scoring a fourth-inning run thanks to a Chestnut Hill College (14-20, 9-11) error, a walk, and a single to left centerfield, 1-0. The Griffins responded in their next at-bat as senior second baseman
Alex Sauer (New Milford, N.J.) drew a one-out walk before advancing to second on a ball to the right fielder and scoring on a bunt single from freshman right fielder
Victoria Grillo (Staten Island, N.Y.), and a Lady Charger error, 1-1. In the seventh inning, Dominican College drew a leadoff walk and used a successful sacrifice to put the winning run in scoring position. Two batters later, Luzetsky's single brought the contest to a close, 2-1. Senior first baseman
Kaya Swanek (Pittston, Pa.) (1-for-2) and junior shortstop
Alessandra Messina (Ambler, Pa.) (1-for-3) were responsible for the other two Chestnut Hill College hits. Sophomore
Gabrielle Merryman (Sewell, N.J.) took the loss (0-4), despite only allowing one earned run on five hits and three walks. She struck out four.
In the opener, Chestnut Hill College recorded a run in both the second and third inning to support Wise's impressive performance. Messina led off the second inning with a single to third base. She advanced to second on the following Riotte single through the left side and scored on a two-out single from Wise, 1-0. In the next Griffin at-bat, sophomore centerfielder
Devon Horner (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) was hit by a pitch before a single from senior left fielder
Ariel Magee (North Cape May, N.J.), a ground out, and a Riotte fly to centerfield brought her home, 2-0. Wise took care of the rest, holding the Lady Chargers to four hits and a pair of walk over the next five frames. Magee (2-for-3) and Riotte (2-for-3) both recorded multiple hits for the Griffins.
Chestnut Hill College continues their CACC schedule tomorrow, Thursday, April 18, when they host the University of the Sciences (USciences) in a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
