Jesse Balcer is pleased to announce the hire of
Bethany Lang as the Assistant Director of Athletics for Academic Success and Community Engagement, "This position is a very integral part of our department, ensuring our student-athletes' needs are met and maximizing their collegiate experience. Bethany's prior work experience and overall personality are going to be a tremendous asset to the College, and the athletic department in particular. Everyone involved in the search is really excited to work with her in the future." In previous appointments, Lang has served as a Tutorial Coordinator and Learning Specialist at Texas A&M University's Nye Academic Center (August 2018 – May 2019) and as an Athletic Academic Specialist in Prairie A&M University's Office of Athletic Compliance and Academic Services (July 2017 – August 2018).
"I am honored and humbled to step into the role of Assistant Director of Athletic for Academic Success and Community Engagement here at Chestnut Hill," Lang declared. She continued, "The College has an excellent tradition of athletic and academic success from its student-athletes, and I am proud to continue to be part of that history." Lang fills a crucial position for Chestnut Hill College's Department of Athletics and Recreation as the Assistant Director of Athletic for Academic Success and Community Engagement. In this position, she will assist Chestnut Hill College's student-athletes in scheduling classes and maintaining academic eligibility, while serving as a faculty liaison to ensure proper procedures for class dismissal and student-athlete academic success. In addition to overseeing the College's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and membership with Chi Alpha Sigma, she will be asked to attended several academic and leadership conferences designed for student-athlete success.
Lang graduated from Neumann University with a bachelor's degree in sports and entertainment management in 2015. She complete three sport-related internships as an undergrad, serving as an Athletic Department Intern for the Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades in Media, Pennsylvania, a Season Ticketing Intern for the Philadelphia Eagles, and a Marketing Intern with the Reading Fightin' Phils.
While deciding to pursue a master's in public administration at West Chester University, Lang fulfilled a business development and group sales internship with the Arena Football League's (AFL) Philadelphia Soul (May 2015 – August 2015). There she established one of her first academic-based, community engagement initiatives; "Touchdown Readers", which was designed to promote life-long reading in low-income school districts throughout the Tri-State Area (Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware). From there, Lang worked toward an academic support and event operations internship at Cabrini University (August 2016 – December 2016), but quickly shifted to an academic coaching graduate assistant (August 2015 – May 2017) position that accompanied her admission to the public administration graduate program at West Chester University.
While pursuing her master's, Lang met one-on-one with the Golden Rams' student-athlete population to develop learning strategies, time management practices, and organizational skills. She served as a student liaison for West Chester University's Career Services, Campus Recreation, Athletics, Alumni Foundation, and Academic Development offices, as well as played a role in the supervision of the "Homework Club" and student-athletes' familiarity with the "Student Records System" and "Desire to Learn" online resources. Before heading west, she filled a similar role as an academic mentor and learning specialist graduate intern (January 2017 – May 2017) at Temple University's Resnick Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes.
Following her master's graduation, Lang continued her professional work in the academic realm of collegiate athletics as an athletic academic specialist at Prairie A&M University. Lang played a vital role for the Panthers' at-risk student-athletes, regularly monitoring their academic success and advising them into various learning services that significantly improved the athletic department's graduate success rate (GSR) and progress toward National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) requirements. Creating a class check-in system, monitoring a student-athlete study hall system, providing guidance for student-athletes on NCAA policies and procedures, implementing an incoming student-athlete testing for screening protocols, and facilitating various student-athlete workshops designed around the writing process, study skills, time management, resume building, networking, and leadership initiatives. Prior to leaving Prairie View A&M University, Lang worked with Disability Services to implement the first "Athletic Academic Services Grant"; a $10,000 initiative that obtained assistive technology that was ultimately used to educate student-athletes on best practices for note-taking, reading, and writing strategies.
Lang's efforts at Prairie A&M University forayed into a tutorial coordinator and learning specialist position at Texas A&M University. There, she assessed the University's need for, as well as recruited, interviewed, and hired academic tutors. Lang coordinated professional development sessions for academic staff and worked hand-in-hand with the Associate Athletic Director for Academics and Academic Advisors on preparing and updating student-athlete academic summary reports. She also served on the University's Policies and Procedures Committee and maintained a working knowledge of the NCAA, the Southeastern Conference (SEC), and University's rules and regulations.
