Philadelphia, Pa. - (3/30/2021) – Chestnut Hill College suffered their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) setback today, falling to cross-city rival, Thomas Jefferson University by a narrow 4-3 margin. The Rams used a 6-4 number two doubles win to gain the upper hand on the short-handed Griffins; Jefferson built on the doubles point with the necessary singles wins in the sixth (default), second (2-6, 6-2, 6-1), and fifth (6-3, 6-3) individual flights. Freshmen,
João Sousa (Pontevedra, Spain) and
Domagoj Dugandzic (Stuttgart, Germany) both contributed a pair of wins to the Chestnut Hill College cause; the duo combined for a 6-4 win in the number two doubles flight before separating for respective singles points in the third (6-3, 6-1) and fourth (6-2, 7-6 (14-12)) flights.
Sousa and Dugandzic's 6-4 win at number two doubles negated the edge Jefferson (2-2, 2-1) received with the Chestnut Hill College (3-2, 2-1) default in the third team flight. Unfortunately, the Rams won the round with a crucial 7-6 (7-5) win at number one singles, 1-0.
As play moved to singles, Jefferson's advantage grew to 2-0 with a default win at number six singles. The Scarlet and Gold battled back with a number one singles win from junior
Tom Pitchley (London, England) (6-3, 6-3) and Sousa's number three singles triumph, 2-2. But the stalemate was short-lived with the Rams scoring match-clinching wins in the second (2-6, 6-2, 6-1), and fifth (6-3, 6-3) individual flights, 4-2. The match concluded with Dugandzic's win number four singles win, 4-3.
Chestnut Hill College resumes their CACC schedule on Thursday, April 8, when they visit Concordia College (NY) for a 2:30 p.m. match.
