Philadelphia, Pa. - (5/2/2021) – The 2021 regular season came to a come today, Sunday, May 2, for Chestnut Hill College as the Griffins hosted University of the Sciences (USciences) in a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contests. The Devils ended the first game early, posting a 14-2 victory thanks to a 12-run fifth inning. USciences completed the sweep with a 10-7 win in game two. Junior shortstop Madison Petroski (Sicklerville, N.J.) was 2-for-4 with a two-out single in the second inning and a three-run home run in the fourth. She also recorded two hits in game one (2-for-3).
Chestnut Hill College (2-26, 2-22) kept the first game with USciences (9-15, 9-15) close, trailing by only a run after four innings, 2-1. Unfortunately, the Devils fifth-inning at-bat produced a dozen (12) runs, 14-1. The Griffins got one run back before game ended early thanks to a sacrifice fly from senior centerfielder Devon Horner (Mt. Laurel, N.J.), 14-2.
Besides Petroski, junior catcher Victoria Grillo (Staten Island, N.Y.) (2-for-2, RBI) the only other Griffins to record multiple hits in the first game. She singled in sophomore designated player Emma Peterson (Reading, Pa.) in the second inning and singled with two out in the fourth inning.
In game two, USciences used their momentum to establish an 8-1 lead after two innings. Chestnut Hill College battled back with Petroski's three-run shot in the fourth inning, 9-4, and a base-clearing single from sophomore second baseman Samantha Toro (Brick, N.J.) in the fifth frame, 9-7. Unfortunately, the Devils' defense finally settled down as the visitors escaped with a 10-7 victory.
Including Petroski, five Griffins recorded multiple hits in game two. Junior right fielder Gabrielle O'Byrne (Moorestown, N.J.) (2-for-4, RBI) was one of them. She singled in a run in the first inning and singled with two out in the fourth inning.
Chestnut Hill College finished the 2021 regular season at 2-26 overall and 2-22 in CACC play. They await seeding in the upcoming 2021 CACC Softball Championship Tournament.
