The Chestnut Hill College Softball team played their fourth doubleheader in six days on Sunday, hosting Salem University at the CHC softball Field. The Griffins also recorded their second doubleheader sweep of the season, beating the Tigers 16-10 and 9-3.
The Griffins improve to 5-11 overall with the sweep while the Tigers fall to 6-14.
Five different Chestnut Hill players had two hits apiece in the opener.
Steph Tonuci (Barrington, N.J.),
Peyton Baldwin (Conshohocken, Pa.) and
Taylor Carter (Fort Washington, Pa.) all had doubles among their two hits. Baldwin also led the Griffins with three RBI as did
Anastasia Watson (Claymont, Del.). Tonuci and
Madison Petroski (Sicklerville, N.J.) drove in two runs apiece.
Petroski earned the win pitching six innings total and allowing four runs on ten hits. The win was her third this week as she improves to 3-4 on the season.
Baldwin's double to left center in the second started the barrage of scoring in the opening game, as
Samantha Toro (Brick, N.J.) and
Victoria Grillo (Staten Island, N.Y.) both scored on the play. Baldwin later scored on an error and Carter came home on
Ariana Carreno's (Pompano Beach, Fla.) single. Watson then drove in two more with a single down the rightfield line to make the score 6-0
Salem cut the Griffins' lead in half with three runs in the top half of the third before the Griffins got two back in the bottom half of the inning, as Toro scored on a wild pitch and Petroski drove home Carter with a single, giving the Griffins an 8-3 lead.
The Tigers responded with three runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth inning to take a 10-8 lead. A double steal in the bottom of the fifth with Tonuci swiping second and Carter swiping home cut the gap to 10-9.
In the bottom of the sixth the Griffins retook the lead, scoring their tenth and 11
th runs on back to back errors and added two more when Tonuci doubled down the left field line to take a 13-10 lead Wild pitches led to two more Chestnut Hill runs and Watson's ground out scored Carreno with the final Griffin run.
Petroski gave up a double in the seventh but retired the next three batters to preserve the win.
In game two Carreno had her first four-hit game of her career while Tonuci and
Kayla Rolon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had three hits apiece as the Griffins took an early lead and never relinquished it enroute to a 9-3 win.
Lily Reid (Texas City, Texas) pitched a complete game to earn her second win of the season, allowing three runs while striking out three.
Carreno and Rolon drove in the first two Griffin runs in the first at-bat. A squeeze bunt by the Tigers in the third brought home Salem's first run and cut the lead to 2-1 before the Griffins added two more runs in the bottom half of the inning with
Skyler Cunningham (Covina, Calif.) plating Carreno and Grillo's sacrifice fly scoring Rolon.
Carreno added an RBI double in the fourth and Cunningham drove in two more with a single to make the score 7-1 heading into the fifth inning.
Salem scored twice in the fifth inning to make the score 7-3 before the Griffins got their final two runs in the sixth as Rolon doubled home Tonuci and Cunningham scored Carreno with a sacrifice fly for her fourth RBI of the game.
Reid gave up three singles as the Tigers made a final attempt to comeback but left all three runners stranded as the Griffins won for the fifth time this week.
The Chestnut Hill softball team will be back in action on Wednesday, March 23, 2022 when they host Wilmington University in the Central Atlantic Collegiate conference opener.
