Golden Bears Take Two from the Griffins

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Softball team faced a strong Kutztown University squad Tuesday afternoon at the CHC softball field, losing both games of their doubleheader 7-0 and 9-3.

The Griffins fall to 6-26 on the season.  Kutztown improves to 24-10.

The Griffins had three hits in the opener with Santina Arena (Brooklyn, N.Y.) accounting for two of them.  Madison Petroski (Sicklerville, N.J.) took the loss pitching a complete game, allowing eight hits and five earned runs.

In game two, Steph Tonuci (Barrington, N.J.) had two of Chestnut Hill's five hits while Skyler Cunningham (Covina, Calif.) and Peyton Baldwin (Conshohocken, Pa.) each drove in a run.  Lily Reid (Texas City, Texas) took the loss, pitching the first three innings, allowing eight hits and three earned runs.

Trailing 2-0, Cunningham reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded in the bottom half of the first with Tonuci who singled to start the inning forced out at home but on the ensuing throw to first, Arena was able to dash home with the first run, cutting the lead in half 2-1.

Three unearned runs gave Kutztown a 5-1 lead in the second and the Golden Bears added single runs in every ensuing inning except the fifth to lead 9-1 as the Griffins came up to bat in the bottom of the seventh.

Samantha Toro (Brick, N.J.) delivered a one out single and scored on Baldwin's double.  Baldwin moved to third on Tonuci's second hit of the game and scored on a wild pitch to make the score 9-3.  Arena then hit a deep fly to left that was caught by the Kutztown left fielder as she crashed into the fence, robbing the freshman of her first collegiate home run and ending the game

The Golden Bears got home runs from Naya Darnowski and Hannah Reimel in the first game and another from Brianna Hughes in the second.  Reimel had two hits in each game to help pace the Kutztown offense.

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Softball team is back in action on Thursday, April 14, 2022 when they host Nyack College at the Chestnut Hill Softball Field.  First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
