A late goal by Le Moyne College propelled the Dolphins to a 4-3 win over the Chestnut Hill College women's Soccer team in their season opening game Thursday afternoon in Syracuse, New York.
Le Moyne's Hildur Unnarsdottir launched a free kick into the upper left portion of the net in the 83
rd minute to break a 3-3Â tie as the Dolphins held off the Griffins the rest of the way for the win.
Junior
Kaitlyn Carter recorded four saves in the loss while Dolphins' goalkeeper Allison Moreau had three.
Freshman
Lauren Sullivan was solid in her collegiate debut, scoring a goal and an assist while fellow freshman
Virginia Perry scored the first of the Griffins three goals.Â
Madeline Jimenez notched the Griffins final goal in the 65
th minute of the second half
Perry put the Griffins on the board at the 30:39 mark of the first half as she broke free, took a pass from Sullivan and put it past the Dolphin goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead. Sullivan's goal followed less than six minutes later, giving the Griffins an early 2-0 lead.Â
Abby Galazka got the assist on Sullivan's score. Â
Le Moyne got on the board with just 2:45 left in the half to make the score 2-1 and tied the game on a penalty kick with 1:01 left in the half.
The Dolphins scored their third unanswered goal in the 53
rd minute to take their first lead of the game 3-2. Jimenez, who was being blanketed by the dolphin defense almost the entire game finally got free in the 65
th minute after taking a pass from
Rachel Apsley and put a shot past Moreau to tie the game at 3-3. Jimenez's goal was the 25th of her career at Chestnut Hill, becoming the sixth player in program history to score 25 or more career goals.
It remained tied at 3-3 until Unnarsdottir's free kick broke the deadlock.
The women's soccer team returns to action on Monday, August 29
th when they host a scrimmage game against Penn State-Abington. The game will be played at the Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School football stadium. Kickoff is 7:00 p.m
