Game Recap: Softball |

Griffins' Rally Falls Short in Final Game of Season

A late rally by the Chestnut Hill College softball team was derailed by Mother Nature as heavy rains cut short a final at-bat comeback attempt as the Griffins lost their final game of the season 7-6 to Post University Wednesday afternoon at the CHC Athletic Field.

Post also won the opening game 9-1 and completed their season with an 8-16 record in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  The Griffins finish their season at 8-39 overall and 5-19 in league play.

The day was also a celebration of the Griffins' two seniors Peyton Baldwin and Samantha Toro, who were playing in their final games as Griffins.   Toro in her final plate appearance in game two had an RBI, drawing a bases loaded walk in the seventh.  The senior also took to the circle to pitch for the first time since the 2021 season.  After a shaky start, where two runs came in on walks and a sacrifice fly, Toro retired the final eight batters she faced in three total innings of work.  The senior did not allow a single hit.

Baldwin delivered an RBI in her final official at-bat with a bases-loaded fielder's choice and was hit by a pitch in her plate appearance in the seventh, finishing the day with the hit in two official at-bats.  She senior second baseman was also flawless in the field, handling seven chances in the two games without and error and finishing her career with nine straight errorless games.

Trailing 7-1 heading into their final at-bat the Griffins battled the rain and sent eight batters to the plate before the umpires decided to call the game.  Jazmine Ramirez started things off with a single and advanced to second when the ball got past the Eagles' first baseman and went out of play.  Erica Kwasek and Macey Matlock then drew walks, loading the bases.  Toro then plated the first run of the inning with her bases loaded walk, prompting the Post head coach to re-enter her starting pitcher.  Kwasek scored on a wild pitch and  Steph Tonuci walked.  With a steady rain falling now, Mianna Lopez Del Haro followed with a single scoring Toro with the third run of the inning.  Skyler Cunningham singled to left field to score Tonuci and Lopez Del Haro and raced all the way to third on subsequent throw in an attempt to get an out at the plate as the rain got heavier.  When Baldwin was hit by the first pitch thrown by Post pitcher Jenny Riquelme, the umpires decided to send the game into a delay before later calling the game with the Griffins one run shy of tying and holding the tying and winning runs on base.

Gabriella Quinones (4-11) wound up taking the loss, tossing four innings, and allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out one.

In the opener, Jordan Tavarez pitched four innings, allowing five runs on seven hits as the Eagles prevailed 9-1.

Tonuci had two of the Griffins' five hits in the contest. Cunningham drove in CHC's lone run.

Post jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on Allyson Wallauer's two-run home run in the first inning.  The Griffins got one run back in the bottom half of the first inning as Tonuci beat out an infield single and scored all the way from first base on Cunningham's single, making the score 2-1.

The Eagles took a 5-1 lead with three runs in the fourth and added four more in the seventh to round out the scoring in their 9-1 win.

Wednesday's doubleheader brought the softball team's season to a close.
