Samantha Toro laid down the perfect bunt with a runner on third to plate the winning running in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Chestnut Hill College Women's Softball team earned a split of their two game series with the College of Staten Island Monday afternoon at the CHC Softball Field with a 5-4 victory.
The Griffins are now 3-26 with the split while the dolphins now have a record of 9-17.
The Dolphins won the first game after coming back from a four run deficit in the seventh inning and scoring a run in the extra frame to earn a 9-8 victory.
In game two,
Abbie Alt Ambriz earned her first collegiate win, pitching two innings of relief for
Jordan Tavarez. Alt Ambriz allowed just one run on two hits with one strikeout.   Â
Trailing by two heading into their final at-bat in the bottom of the seventh, the Griffins started their rally with a hit from
Peyton Baldwin who was replaced on the base paths by
Jazmine Ramirez. Ramirez advanced on a wild pitch and moved to third on a single by
Lucianna Boggi putting the tying runs on base with just one out.Â
Mianna Lopez Del Haro then delivered a big blow, hitting a double into center field to score Ramirez and move the tying run just 60 feet away in the person of Boggi.Â
Following the Lopez Del Haro double, CSI changed pitchers and brought in Kelsey Strayer to replace Alexandra Frenza who had earned the win in relief in the first game. Strayer's first pitch to Toro was low and wide as Boggi raced home and slid under the tag with the tying run after the wild pitch. On the subsequent pitch, Toro pushed a bunt to the first base side of the pitcher for a perfect suicide squeeze as Lopez Del Haro left third on contact and sprinted home. No play was able to be made and the Griffins had their first walkoff win of the season.
Chestnut Hill finished the game with seven hits, including two from Lopez Del Haro. Â
Skyler Cunningham and
Kayla Rolon each drove in a run in the Griffins' two run fourth inning, giving the home team a 2-1 lead at the time.
The Dolphins retook the lead with two runs in the fifth and added one more in the sixth on a solo home run from Anissa Acosta.
In the opener, the Griffins banged out 12 hits, including four for extra bases but were unable to shut the door on the dolphins as they rallied to tie the game in the seventh and scored thew winning run in the eighth inning.
Steph Tonuci tripled to lead off the bottom of the first inning for the Griffins and scored on Toro's single, giving CHC an early 1-0 lead. The triple was the first of three hits in the game for the Griffins' shortstop.Â
The Dolphins scored four times in the third inning with Aileen Balderas delivering a two run home run to give the visitors a 4-1 lead.
Chestnut Hill chipped away at the lead with two runs in the bottom half of the third and two more in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead. Lopez Del Haro doubled with two outs in the third before Rolon launched a moonshot that went over the centerfield fence in the deepest part of the ball field, cutting the deficit to one with a two run home run.. Tonuci's two out single in the fourth brought home Boggi with the second run of the inning and gave the Griffins a 5-4 lead.
Boggi hit a two run single in the fifth and Lopez Del Haro added an RBI single in the sixth to increase the Griffins lead to 8-4, heading into the final inning. CSI strung together five hits and scored four times to tie the game at 8-8 and the game went into extra innings when the Griffins could not score in the bottom half of the seventh.
A runner is placed on second to start each half-inning starting with the eighth frame and the Dolphins took advantage, moving the runner to third with a sacrifice bunt and scoring the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly. Chestnut did not score in the bottom of the eighth and the dolphins hung on for the win.
The women's softball team is back in action tomorrow as they travel to Lincoln University for a non-conference doubleheader.
