In a rematch of last year's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Women's Soccer Championship game,
Elisabeth Stokes broke a 1-1 tie in the 71
st minute as Chestnut Hill College upended the defending CACC champions, the University of Bridgeport 2-1 Saturday afternoon at the CHC Athletic Field on the Griffins' campus.
With the win, their first in three tries against the Purple Knights, the Griffins improve to 3-2-1 overall and 2-0 in CACC games. The Purple Knights fall to 4-3-2 and 2-2 in conference games.
Stokes took a long free kick from
Kaitlyn Brace coming from the right side and her shot hit the post but ricocheted behind UB goalkeeper Antia Lopez for the go-ahead goal and the eventual game winner in the 71
st minute, giving the Griffins a 2-1 lead.
The Griffins defense held off a frenzied attack from the Purple Knights over the final 19 minutes. The Purple knights did not get a shot on goal but had three shots and a corner kick in the 19 minute span. All three shots were either high or wide. As time was winding down, Chestnut Hill made prudent substitutions to keep players fresh and their defense was able to send the ball deep into Purple knight territory several times, forcing the visitors to use valuable time to set up their offense.
Bridgeport's leading scorer, Kate Thill put the Purple Knights on the board early, scoring her fifth goal of the season at the 10:33 mark of the first half.Â
Rebecca Dalton got the equalizer at the 36:05 mark when she headed a pass off a free kick from
Virginia Perry into the net to even the score at 1-1.
Stokes finished the game with a game high five shots and four shots on goal. Dalton and
Payton Lennon had the remaining two shots on goal for CHC.   Goalkeeper
Ellie Stratz made five saves in picking up her third win of the season.
Looking at the numbers, the Griffins outshot the Purple Knights 12-11 (7-6 in the second half) while both teams produced six shots on goal. Bridgeport had the only three corner kicks in the gameÂ
