Softball Drops Home Opener to Wildcats

A cold and breezy day was the setting for the home opener for the Chestnut Hill College women's softball team home opener Tuesday afternoon as the Griffins faced Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference powerhouse Wilmington University.  The Wildcats came away with a two game sweep of the Griffins, winning the opener 10-1 and then taking the nightcap 7-2.

The Griffins fall to 1-9 overall and 0-4 in leagues play.  The Wildcats improve to 4-0 in league play and 13-10 overall.

Lucianna Boggi had two of the Griffins five hits in the opener while Anastasia Watson drilled an RBI double.  Gabriella Quinones allowed ten hits and ten runs (five earned) in the loss.

Skyler Cunningham drove in both runs in the game two loss, recording three hits.  Camille Dunham and Kayla Rolon had doubles.  Michelle Baker took the loss, giving up all seven runs (six earned) while striking out two.

Baker gave up a solo run in the second and the Wildcats increased the lead to 4-0 in the fourth and 5-0 in the sixth inning.  In the bottom half of the sixth, Cunningham laced a two out single to left field scoring Dunham and Mianna Lopez DelHaro to make the score 5-2.

Wilmington added two more runs in the seventh to round out the scoring in the second game.

Quinones struggled in the early innings in the opener, giving up a pair of runs in the second inning, four more in the third and another two in the fourth, as the Wildcats took an 8-0 lead before the Griffins even got on the board.

Watson delivered a one-out double in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 8-1.  The Wildcats added two more unearned runs in the sixth to round out the scoring.

The softball team returns to action on Thursday, March 21, 2024, hosting Franklin Pierce University in a regional doubleheader.  First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
