The Chestnut Hill College Women's Soccer team battled against a tough Assumption University squad in their home opener Tuesday afternoon, but could never quite catch the Greyhounds as they fell 6-2 at Victory field in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania.
The Griffins fall to 0-1-1 on the season while the Greyhounds improve to 3-0-0.
Assumption struck first with two goals in a three minute span with Delaney Farinha scoring in the 23rd minute and Haleigh Ward in the 26th to take a 2-0 lead. Lauren Sullivan got one back for the Griffins, putting some English on a free kick as the ball sailed past AU goalkeeper Frida Larsson's left side to cut the score to 2-1 where it remained until halftime.
Farinha made the score 3-1 in the 61st minute but the Griffins cut the deficit back to one some four minutes later as Alyssa DeGeorge fired one into the net following a Larsson save on a shot by Sullivan, making the score 3-2. For DeGeorge, the goal was her first as a Griffin.
Ward added her second goal of the game in the 68th minute and the Greyhounds added two more scores to make the final score 6-2.
Haley Esposito made her first collegiate start for the Griffins, recording 13 saves. Assumption outshot Chestnut Hill 19-5 on net and 24-11 overall.Â
The women's soccer team returns to action on Friday, September 13, 2024 when they host Harcum College. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
