Conference play began for the Chestnut Hill College softball team Saturday afternoon as they hosted Bloomfield College for a doubleheader at the CHC Softball Field. The Griffins swept the two games, defeating the Bears 8-5 in the first game and 3-0 in the second.
The two wins mark the first time since the 2016 season that Chestnut Hill has opened conference play with a doubleheader sweep. That year the Griffins swept Goldey-Beacom College 8-2, and 2-1. Chestnut Hill improved to 9-8 overall and 2-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games with the wins on Saturday. The Bears remain winless at 0-17.
The Griffins banged out 15 hits it the opener with Anastasia Watson and Skyler Cunningham recording three hits apiece. Camille Dunham and Lucianna Boggi drove in two runs apiece. Gabriella Quinones earned the win in relief, pitching the final four innings, allowing two runs on four hits.
In game two Isabelle Tetreault tossed a complete game shutout for her fourth win of the season, allowing just four hits while striking out nine BC batters. Watson had two of the Griffins six hits and drove in a run. Alauna Kelley also had an RBI single.
The Griffins scored three runs in the second inning in game one. Boggi plated a run via a fielder's choice and then came around to score on Dunham's triple. Christina Contreras singled home Dunham for a 3-1 CHC lead.
The Bears tied the game with two runs in the top of the third inning before the Griffins countered with four in the bottom half of the frame. Watson had a leadoff double and later scored on an error. Boggi then drove in her second run to score Kayla Rolon. Cunningham scored when Dunham hit into a fielder's choice and Boggi later scored on another error to make the score 7-3.
Watson led off the fourth with a single and later scored on Cunningham's single to make the score 8-3. The Bears scored twice in the top of the fifth to make the score 8-5. Quinones struck out the side in the top of the sixth inning and retired the Bears in order in the seventh to earn her third win of the season.
In game two, Watson delivered a two-out RBI single to score Izabella Rodriguez in the first inning, staking the Griffins to an early 1-0 lead. Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch in the third as Tetreault held the Bears to just one hit through the first three innings. Watson's hit extended her hitting streak to 12 games.
Tetreault allowed two hits and walk to load the bases with one out in the fourth but struck out the final two Bloomfield batters to leave the bases loaded and preserve the 2-0 lead. The Bears again threatened in the sixth, putting two runners in scoring position with one out before Tetreault retired the last two batters in the inning.
Amaris Guzman singled to start the sixth inning. Two batters later Watson doubled and Kelley followed with a single to score Guzman with the final run. Tetreault struck out the first two batters in Bloomfield's final at-bat before Contreras made a great play at shortstop to get the final out.
The softball team returns to action on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, when they host Fairmont State University. First pitch is at 2:00 p.m.
