Daniel Murtagh joined Head Coach Casey Huckel’s men’s soccer coaching staff as an assistant prior to the 2014 season. He carries with him an extensive resume of professional experience as a player, coach, and trainer.
Murtagh’s highly successful playing career includes two decades of experience in both the amateur and professional ranks. Competing for the Phoenix Sport Club (Phoenix SC), a member of the United Soccer League (USL), since 2003, Murtagh has helped lead the club to six Amateur Cup Championships, six league titles, two United States Open Cup championships, and an appearance in the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. In 2009, Murtagh was on the roster of the Harrisburg City Islanders in the USL Professional Division, during which he participated in the USL Pro/Division I Professional Combine.
Prior to his professional career, Murtagh was a part of four state championships and three regional finals appearances with the Council Rock Dynamo (1994-1998) and was a two-time All-Catholic League performer at Northeast Catholic High School (1993-1997) before becoming an all-tournament performer at Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science (Philadelphia University) in 1997. From there, Murtagh went on to play at Temple University from 1998-2000. He played a season with the United German Hungarians in 1999, helping the club to a United States Amateur Cup championship and an appearance in the finals of the United States Open Cup. In 2000, Murtagh spent time on professional trial in Dusseldorf, Germany.
As a personal and team trainer (2000-present), Murtagh has guided numerous athletes to playing careers at the Division I, II, and III levels. From 2000-2003 he served as a coach for the Philadelphia Kixx of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), for whom he took part in a professional trial in 2004. Murtagh was also an assistant coach at Saint Maria Goretti High School (Philadelphia, Pa.) in 2002.
Murtagh graduated from Holy Family University in 2007 with dual degrees in sports marketing and management.
