Julia Cohen joined the Chestnut Hill College men’s and women’s tennis coaching staffs prior to the spring 2017 season. A professional in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), Cohen ranked as high as #97 in the world after an impressive collegiate career at the University of Florida and the University of Miami. As a junior player, she was perennially ranked #1 in the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Middle States under-18, under-14, and under-12 circuits.
Cohen began playing tennis at a young age, competing in various United States Tennis Association (USTA) Tournaments as early as five years old. She captured national championships in the under-9 and under-10 divisions, before winning 15 Gold Balls as the United States #1 player on every surface at the under-18, under-14, and under-12 levels of competition. Cohen continued to enjoy success as a member of the Junior International Tennis Federation (JITF), where she competed in 12 junior Grand Slam events and earned a spot on the United States International Fed Cup team while climbing as high as #4 in the June 2007 world rankings.
In her first season of collegiate competition (2007-2008) at the University of Florida, Cohen was named both the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Rookie of the Year after compiling a 14-8 record at number one singles and a 21-1 standing at number three doubles. A transfer to the University of Miami (2008-2009) brought the #5 spot in the Campbell’s/ITA National Singles Rankings as well as All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and ITA All-American accolades; earned on the strength of her 33-8 singles mark (23-5 @ #1 singles dual matches, 11-0 vs. ACC) and a 23-6 doubles campaign.
Cohen’s professional career began in 2010 and included stints with the Philadelphia Freedoms and the Boston Lobsters of Billie Jean King’s World Team Tennis League. In the ITF circuit, she earned four singles and five double championships, including a 2012 run to the WTA Baku Cup Finals that elevated her to #121 in the WTA Doubles Rankings and #97 in the WTA Singles Rankings.
Cohen earned her bachelor’s degree in sport administration, Summa Cum Laude, from California University of Pennsylvania in 2012 and received her master’s degree in sport psychology a year later (2013). She has volunteered at various tennis events and clinics such as the Maccabi Games and the Arthur Ashe Youth & Tennis Center (Legacy Youth Tennis and Education) in addition to serving as a “mental toughness” and “sports psychology” speaker at the Nike Sports Camps.
As a coach, Cohen has directed the home school tennis program at the Alonso/Requin Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Florida, and the college developmental program at Green Valley Country Club in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania.
