Covic Collects CACC Women’s Tennis Monthly Honor Roll Appearance

New Haven, Conn. - (5/6/2019) – Junior Mia Covic (Novi Sad, Serbia) was part of a number doubles win (6-3) in a 5-2 non-conference loss at Jefferson on April 5 and collected wins in both singles (6-1, 6-4) and doubles play (6-3) in a 4-3 loss at Millersville University on April 7 to earn an Honor Roll appearance on April’s Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Monthly Report.

The Griffins’ April 5 match versus Jefferson was moved to the dry confines of the Legacy Youth Tennis Center. Chestnut Hill College (2-11) took advantage in the doubles round thanks to a 6-1 number three win from junior Nicole Yang (Blue Bell, Pa.) and sophomore Mariana Sanchez (Trenton, N.J.) and a 6-3 number one win from Covic and senior Daniela Siqueira (Sao Paulo, Brazil), 1-0. Jefferson (7-8) won number two doubles (6-4) at the conclusion of the round, unfortunately the victory motivated the Lady Rams for four straight singles wins. They scored their first point with a 6-1, 6-0, win at number four singles (2-0) and their march to victory followed with wins at number five (6-0, 6-0), number six (6-1, 6-1), and number three (6-4, 6-2) singles, 4-1. The Griffins momentarily disrupted the Lady Ram run with a 7-5, 6-1, number two singles win from junior Barbara Broville (Toulouse, France), 4-2. Jefferson concluded the match with their 6-4, 6-0, win in the top singles flight, 5-2.

Shorthanded, Chestnut Hill College traveled to Millersville University for the final match of the 2018-2019 season. Millersville University (5-13) enjoyed a head start as Chestnut Hill College offered no competition at number three doubles. Fortunately, Yang and Broville combined for a 6-1 win in the second flight, before Covic and Siqueira triumphed 6- 3 in the top team flight to rally for the doubles point, 1-0. The default win in the sixth flight evened the match at the start of individual play, 1-1, and the Marauders briefly held a 2-1 lead with their 6-0, 6-0, win at number three singles. Broville knotted the match once again at 2-2 with her 6-0, 6-2, win at number two singles, but respective 6-1, 6-0, and 6-0, 6-0, decisions in the fifth and fourth flights pushed the match in Millersville University’s favor. Covic added the Griffins’ final point, 4-3, with her 6-1, 6-4, win at number one singles.

Chestnut Hill College finished the 2018-2019 season with a 2-11 overall record and a 2-6 standing in CACC play.
