Raia No-Hitter Reals In CACC Pitcher of the Week Title
New Haven, Conn. – (4/22/2013) – Gathering momentum, heading toward a possible Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) postseason appearance, Chestnut Hill College gave sophomore pitcher
Dominic Raia III (Philadelphia, Pa.) plenty of support when he came within a walk of perfection in the Griffins 11-0, game-two win at Caldwell College on Saturday, April 20. The effort was the first in program history and earned Raia the CACC Pitcher of the Week title.
Chestnut Hill College (16-20, 9-9) got contributions up and down the line-up in game two against the Cougars, but Raia needed very little help as he raced through the Caldwell College lineup, blending in eight strikeouts while allowing his only base runner to reach on a seventh-inning, one-out walk. Earlier in the week, Raia benefitted from the Griffins surging offense, which powered them to an 8-5 win in the opener of Tuesday's, April 16, CACC doubleheader with the University of the Sciences (USciences). A four-run fifth inning gave the Griffins a 4-3 advantage over the Devils, from there they relied on Raia, junior pitcher
Richard Cavazza (Highland, N.Y.), and graduate pitcher
Micah Winterstein (Philadelphia, Pa.) to deliver the victory. Raia went 7.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on nine hits while striking out four, before turning the contest over to the bullpen.
Raia has recorded, a team-high, five wins (5-3) with a 3.23 earned run average (ERA). Over 55.2 innings of work, he has allowed 20 earned runs on 56 hits and 16 walks while striking out 35. He has held opposing batters to a .264 (56-for-212) batting average.
The baseball team briefly breaks from their CACC schedule to visit Millersville University for a 3:00 p.m. contest on Tuesday, April 23.
