Perfect Porter Earns CACC’s Weekly Player and Rookie Awards New Haven, Conn. – (4/8/2014) – Freshman
Mariano Porter (Cuernavaca, Mexico) was undefeated in both singles and doubles play, as he contributed seven wins to a 4-1 week of competition for Chestnut Hill College. For his effort, Porter was recognized as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Player and Rookie of the Week.
Chestnut Hill College (14-4, 4-1) killed two birds with one stone On Monday, April 7, splitting their squad for a pair of CACC matches at Caldwell College and Bloomfield College. Starting a half-hour earlier in Caldwell, New Jersey, a Griffin lineup led by Porter first disposed of the Cougars 8-1, before a second group of Griffins headlined by senior
Anthony Moore (Williamstown, N.J.) earned a 9-0 victory over the Deacons. Porter first teamed with fellow freshman
Pedro Oranges (Sao Paulo, Brazil) for an 8-5 win at number one doubles, before leading of the Griffins singles lineup with a 6-0, 6-1 win at number one singles.
Later, in a busy weekend of competition, Chestnut Hill College went 2-0 in their Saturday matches at the Bloomsburg University Duals before losing to St. Joseph's University in a Sunday dual match. Porter remained undefeated for the week, teaming with Oranges for an 8-6 over the Rams second duo flight, an 8-2 win over the Golden Bears second team, and an 8-6 win over the Hawks middle pair. Porter also claimed two singles at number one, scoring a 6-1, 6-1 win in the victory over the Rams and a 6-2, 6-4 win over the Hawk's senior Jose Sierra (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico).
The men's tennis team resumes their CACC schedule on Wednesday, April 16, when they host Philadelphia University in a 4:00 p.m. match.
