John Bernhardt III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) proved to be the better arm in a pitcher’s duel that ended with Chestnut Hill College earning a 2-1, game-two, Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over Philadelphia University. His performance was recently recognized with a CACC Weekly Honor Roll mention.
Pitching took over after annual Senior Night festivities, with Bernhardt and Philadelphia University’s sophomore pitcher Fernando Garza (Loredo, Texas) dueling for five scoreless innings before a sixth-inning lead-off walk to sophomore designated hitter
Nobel Unger III (Hatboro, Pa.) and a double from sophomore left fielder
Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.) broke the stalemate in the Chestnut Hill College’s (17-17, 12-8) favor, 1-0. After a scoreless seventh inning, the Rams tied the contest in the top of the eighth, 1-1, only for the Griffins to regain the lead with two-out singles from Looby, sophomore catcher
Robert Slagle III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.), and junior right fielder
Michael McLaughlin (Philadelphia, Pa.) putting them ahead 2-1. Bernhardt allowed one run on six hits and four walks as he struck out five before handing things over to junior pitcher

The baseball team now waits seeding in the upcoming CACC Championship Tournament which will be announced with the completion of the league’s regular season schedule.
