Koehler and Sutton Secure CACC Honor Roll Recognition After Superior Play versus Lightning and Clippers
New Haven, Conn. - (10/27/2015) – Continuing to punish their recent Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponents, the Chestnut Hill College women’s volleyball team scored a pair of league wins last week behind the impressive play of junior middle hitter Emily Koehler (Bath, Pa.) and freshman setter Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.), who respectively earned Honor Roll mentions for the league’s Player and Rookie of the Week awards.
A decisive 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-12) victory was just what the doctor ordered for (9-16, 8-4) who made their trip to Goldey-Beacom College on Tuesday, October 20, a short one with a season-high 15 aces in the CACC match. Junior libero Regina Trabosh (Norristown, Pa.) tied a career-high with six aces while junior outside hitter Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) was the Griffins top scorer with ten points on six kills and four aces.
The Griffins 15 aces were the team's most since the 2013 campaign, when they spotted 16 in a 3-2 (25-15, 25-14, 24-26, 21-25, 15-10) win over Glenville Stats University (9/13/13). Behind 26 assists from Sutton and the efficient play Koehler, the Griffins hit .307 (30K-7E-75TA) as a team. Koehler led the Griffins with nine kills on a .692 (9K-0E-13TA) hitting percentage, while senior outside hitter Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.) was close behind with eight kills on a .471 (8K-0E-17TA) hitting percentage. McBride recorded a team-high 12 digs in addition to her offensive production. Trabosh added ten digs and a block to her impressive night on the serve.
Chestnut Hill College scored a third consecutive league victory with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-21, 25-20) triumph at Concordia College (NY) on Saturday, October 24. For a second straight match the Griffins hit .307 (32K-9E-75TA) and reached double digit aces as Chestnut Hill College spotted 11 serves for points. McBride led the team effort with ten points coming on two block assists and nine kills on a .471 (9K-1E-17TA).
The Griffins came out swinging, connecting for a .625 (11K-1E-16TA) team hitting percentage in a 25-10 opening-set win. Koehler captained the Griffins in the initial set, scoring her first four kills of the season off the feed from Sutton, who provided ten assists in the frame.
Concordia College (NY) put up a fight in the second set as the Clippers recovered from an early 11-3 deficit to narrow the final margin to four, 25-21; the Griffins managed to hold on thanks to six aces and three kills apiece from McBride and Biro. The third set was the most competitive of the afternoon with the Clippers owning a lead as late as 17-16, before the Griffins sprinted ahead for the 25-20 win and match sweep, 3-0.
McBride’s effort was complimented by eight-kill efforts from Koehler and Biro. Both also recorded two blocks. Sutton provided 23 assists, an ace, and two digs, while Trabosh hustled to ten digs in addition to scoring two aces. Senior defensive specialist Meghan Chiovitti (Brighton, Colo.) and sophomore defensive specialist Peyton Reno (Wilmington, Del.) led the Griffins exception serving performance with three aces apiece. Sophomore middle hitter Melissa Shunk (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) totaled four block assists to headline the defensive effort.
Chestnut Hill College continues their recent road schedule with a 7:00 p.m. CACC match at Wilmington University on Tuesday, October 27.
