McDermott’s ECC Defensive Player of the Week Selection Leads Trio of Chestnut Hill College Honorees
Central Islip, N.Y. – (3/11/2017) – For the second time in three weeks, Chestnut Hill College senior goalkeeper Thomas McDermott (Ridley, Pa.) was named the East Coast Conference (ECC) Defensive Player of the Week. The Scarlet and Gold net minder was joined on the ECC Men’s Lacrosse Weekly Report by senior attack Tanner Fisher (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) and freshman midfielder Carson Rees (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia), who fueled the Griffin offense in a narrow 12-11 loss at Florida Institute of Technology (FIT) and a thrilling 7-6, overtime triumph over ECC rival, #16 LIU Post.
Chestnut Hill College deposited the last goal of the first quarter and the first three of the second quarter to hold a 6-4 advantage over the Florida Institute of Technology (FIT) at halftime of Tuesday's contest. In the second half, the home side held an 8-5 upper hand, scoring the game-winning-goal on a man-up opportunity with 2:20 remaining. Fisher headlined the Scarlet and Gold effort and matched his career single-game scoring mark with five goals. He also recorded a ground ball. Rees did the same in addition to his four points (two goals and two assists) while McDermott made 10 saves, recovered six ground balls, and forced a turnover in the loss (1-2).
Fisher started and ended the scoring in Saturday’s thrilling 7-6 ECC overtime victory over #16 LIU Post, as Chestnut Hill College defeated the perennial National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II power for the third time in eight seasons, and second time in the last two. The Scarlet and Gold recovered from a 4-1 deficit with a third-quarter rally that included McDermott’s first collegiate goal. The Griffin keeper shined in net as well with 19 saves, two ground balls, and a caused turnover. Fisher added a caused turnover to his two goals, while Rees gave Chestnut Hill College the lead, 6-5, with a man-up goal at 8:55 of the fourth quarter.
McDermott totaled 29 saves, eight ground balls, and two caused turnovers in addition to his historical tally – the first by a Griffin goalkeeper. Fisher totaled seven goals on a team-high 19 shots. He also recorded a ground ball and a caused turnover. Rees only need three shots to score his three goals, he also provided two assists and recovered a ground ball.
The Chestnut Hill College men's lacrosse team now breaks from competition for a full two weeks, before hosting Dominican College in a 3:00 p.m. ECC Home Opener on Saturday, March 25.
