Reno Named CACC Defensive Player of the Week, Gelfan Graces Weekly Honor Roll
New Haven, Conn. - (10/3/2017) – Senior libero Peyton Reno (Wilmington, Del.) hustled to 27 digs, scored a pair of aces, and provided an assist, while senior right side Samantha Gelfan (Chandler, Ariz.) totaled a team-high 22.5 points in Chestnut Hill College’s 1-1 week of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play against Holy Family University and Concordia College (NY). Their efforts respective garnered Reno and Gelfan the CACC Women’s Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week honors and a spot on the league’s Weekly Honor Roll.
The net play of the frontcourt kept Chestnut Hill College (3-13, 2-4) in Wednesday, September 27, evening’s CACC match at Holy Family University (9-6, 4-1) as the Griffins combined for nine team blocks in effort to slow the Tigers. Unfortunately, Holy Family University overcame the Scarlet and Gold defense to take the first of two conference meetings by a 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-24) final. Gelfan scored a team-high 8.5 points on seven kills and three block assists, while freshman middle hitter Ragen Baldwin (Lancaster, Pa.) headlined the Griffin defense with five blocks (1 solo, 4 assists) of her own. Reno recorded an assist, three aces, and 21 digs in the defeat.
With three players finishing in double digit points and a .314 (44K-11E-105TA) team hitting percentage on Saturday, September 30, Chestnut Hill College enjoyed an efficient 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-19) CACC victory over Concordia College (NY). Sophomore outside hitter Reily Byxbee (Madison, Conn.) was chief among the Scarlet and Gold strikers with 10 kills, but Gelfan was the Griffins’ top scorer with 14.0 points on nine kills, three aces, and three blocks (1 solo, 2 assists). Reno offered six digs.
Gelfan recorded 16 kills on a .234 (16K-5E-47TA) hitting percentage, spotted three aces, and made six blocks (1 solo, 5 assists) in addition to providing the Griffins with four digs in the two league matches.
The Chestnut Hill College women’s volleyball team returns to Sorgenti Arena on Tuesday, October 3, when they host CACC rival, Jefferson University in a 7:00 p.m. Faculty Appreciation Night affair.
