Reno Reels In Second CACC Defensive Player Of the Week Title, Byxbee Appears on Honor Roll

New Haven, Conn. - (10/16/2017) – Helping Chestnut Hill College to last week’s 2-1 effort that included league wins over Georgian Court University (W, 3-2 on October 11) and Felician University (W, 3-0 on October 14), senior libero Peyton Reno (Wilmington, Del.) and sophomore outside hitter Reily Byxbee (Madison, Conn.) were respectively recognized as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women’s Volleyball Co-Defensive Player of the Week and a member of the Weekly Honor Roll. Byxbee tied for the team lead in points, 31.0, over the course of the matches with 27 kills, three aces, a solo block, and two block assists, while Reno earned her second Defensive Player of the Week title in the last three weeks with seven assists and three aces on top of 48 digs.

Relentless grit and intensity catapulted the Chestnut Hill College (6-17, 5-6) to a 3-2 (25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 24-26, 16-14) win over CACC rival, Georgian Court University in Wednesday evening's Side-Out Dig Pink Foundation match. The Griffins found success in the first, 25-21, second, 25-21 and fifth sets, 16-14, with sophomore middle hitter Cassie Callahan (St. Louis, Mo.) and Byxbee recording 14 kills apiece. Byxbee added 20 digs and two assists to her 14 kills, while Reno headlined the Griffin defense with 25 digs. She also provided three assists and two aces.

Chestnut Hill College led Felician University (2-14, 1-10) nearly the whole way in a 25-23 opening set. The Griffins pulled away from a 9-9 tie to earn a 25-20 win over the Golden Falcons in the second set. And in the third set, it was all Scarlet and Gold until Felician College rallied from a 16-10 deficit for a 24-24 stalemate. The Griffins’ separator came on a kill from senior right side Samantha Gelfan (Chandler, Ariz.), 25-24, and the clincher on an ace from sophomore defensive specialist Janie Green (Hayes, Va.), 26-24. Reno and Byxbee both recorded double digit digs; the former totaled 15 digs in excess of three assists, while the latter made 11 digs in addition to seven kills, an assist, and two block assists.

SCSU (15-5) used the Griffins’ fatigue to their favor, scoring a decisive 25-17 win in the first set of the second match. Chestnut Hill College approached the second set versus the Owls with determination level the field, but eventually squandered an early 6-3 lead in a 25-20 SCSU win. The sea change gave the Owls all the fuel they needed to post a 25-12 victory in the third set. Chestnut Hill College battled the Owls behind Byxbee’s eight-point effort. She also recorded seven digs. Reno finished the non-conference fray with eight digs, an assist, and an ace.

The Chestnut Hill College women’s volleyball team returns to Sorgenti Arena on Tuesday, October 17, when they host local CACC rival, the University of the Sciences (USciences) in a 7:00 p.m. Go4theGoal, Lace-Up for Pediatric Cancer match.
