Melnychenko Three-Peats 
as ECC Rookie of the Week
 
Central Islip, NY – (4/25/2011) – Freshman attack Mike Melnychenko (St. Catharines, Ontario) earned his third The East Coast Conference (ECC) Rookie of the Week award after leading Chestnut Hill College to a 14-13 upset of #5 Dowling College on Saturday, April 23. Melnychenko totaled, a career-high, six goals while recovering four ground balls to spirit the Griffins second win over a top-ten ECC opponent.
 
Melnychenko effortlessly deposited the first two goals of the game and later helped Chestnut Hill College’s (7-5, 3-5) recover from a Dowling College rally to preserve the victory. He humbled the Golden Lions with two swift scores then continued the Griffins first-quarter run with two more magnificent goals, 6-1. The Golden Lions recovered by the end of the half and appeared to have control in the closing frame, but the Griffins were all but defeated and as they united for a 4-1 deciding run.
 
As the offense’s main gear, Melnychenko has led the Griffins in goals (42), points (49), shots (78), and shooting percentage (53.8%), while ranking second in ground balls (35). He is currently among the ECC’s top-ten in three categories; first in goals-per-game (3.50), tied for second in points-per-game (4.08), and eighth in shots-per-game (6.50). 
 
The men’s lacrosse team continues ECC play with a 1:00 p.m. game at Molloy College on Saturday, April 30.
