Awl Earns First CACC Weekly Honor Roll Recognition
New Haven, Conn. - (12/18/2017) – Junior guard Liban Awl (Manassas, Va.) made a career-high, 10 (10-of-20, .500) field goals and led four Griffins in double figures with a team-high, 26 points in a 86-76 loss at Shepherd University on Saturday, December 16. The performance earned him his first-ever appearance on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men’s Basketball Weekly Report, garnering Honor Roll recognition.
For their last non-conference tilt of the 2017-2018 season, Chestnut Hill College visited Shepherd University on Saturday evening. Despite a combined 9-of-15 (.600) three point shooting performance from Awl and fellow junior guard, Cartier Talford, and just six team turnovers, the Scarlet and Gold lost to the hot-handed Rams in a 86-76 conclusion.
Shepherd University (4-6) shot 18-of-27 (.667) from the floor in the first half; the efficient effort put the home team ahead of Chestnut Hill College (1-9) by double digits, 17-6, at 14:05 and as many as 17 points, 29-12 (11:48), before Awl and Talford combined for six three point buckets in a 28-18 Griffin run to halftime, 47-40. Early in the second half (16:49), a jumper from senior guard Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) cut the Ram lead down to three points, 49-46, but that was as close as Chestnut Hill College. Unfortunately, Shepherd University flexed their lead back to a dozen (12) points, 60-48, by 12:39 and took advantage of their free throw chances – 12-of-15 (.800) in the second half – to secure the 10-point win. Four (4-of-8, .500) of Awl’s 10 buckets came from long range. He also recorded four rebounds, three assists, and three steals as the Griffins’ top performer.
The Chestnut Hill College men’s basketball team resumes their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule on Tuesday, December 19, when they host Holy Family University in an 7:00 p.m. contest.
