Callahan Collects CACC Women’s Volleyball Weekly Honor Roll Accolades
Wilmington, Del. – (9/8/2018) – Earning all-tournament recognition at this past weekend’s Wildcat Regional Invitational and posting 13 kills on a .520 (13K-0E-25TA) hitting percentage in Chestnut Hill College’s 3-1 (20-25, 28-26, 25-21, 25-21) league loss to Wilmington University, junior middle hitter Cassie Callahan (St. Louis, Mo.) earned mention on this week’s Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Honor Roll. Callahan totaled 58 kills, six assists, seven aces, 64 digs, and five blocks over the course six matches; she recorded 10 points or more in four of those affairs, including a career-high 18 kills in the finale versus American International College (AIC) (L, 1-3 25-16, 13-25, 21-25, 19-25).
Chestnut Hill College (2-6, 0-1) set out on the road for the first time this season, traveling to Bloomsburg University (2-3) for Tuesday evening's match. The Griffins put forth their best effort in the first set, keeping pace with the Huskies as late as 22-22, before dropping the frame 25-22. The home team used the momentum to end the match in three sets as they defeated the Scarlet and Gold by a 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-12) final. Sophomore outside hitter Corrine Kalala (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) led the Griffins in points (7.0) thanks to 17 assists from senior setter Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.). Callahan offered four kills, an assist, an ace, five digs, and a solo block.
The Scarlet and Gold welcomed Wilmington University (3-6, 1-0) to Sorgenti Arena for Wednesday's CACC season opener. The Griffins won the opening set by a 25-20 final and lead early in the second frame, but the Wildcats rallied for a 28-26 second-set win before stealing the match with a pair of 25-21 wins. Sutton offered 37 assists, while junior outside hitter Reily Byxbee (Madison, Conn.) shined with a double-double that included a career and team-high 19 kills (19 points) and a team-high 18 digs. Callahan reported a block assist in excess of her efficient hitting performance.
On Friday, September 7, Chestnut Hill College began two days of competition at Wilmington University's Wildcat Regional Invitational with an afternoon match versus Franklin Pierce University (FPU) and Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU).
The Griffins played their best frame of the day in their opening set opposite the Ravens, but could not maintain their efficiency as they dropped the next three sets in a 3-1 (17-25, 28-26, 25-19, 25-13) loss to FPU. Unfortunately, the Owls did not take it any easier on the Scarlet and Gold, dismissing the Griffins in three sets, 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 31-29). Sutton directed the Chestnut Hill College offense with six kills, 55 assists, and 21 digs between the two matches; Callahan stood out among her targets with 14 kills, four assists, two aces, 37 digs, and a block.
Chestnut Hill College continued play in the Wildcat Regional Invitational on Saturday, September 8, with matches versus Merrimack College and American International College (AIC). The Griffins scored a 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-19) win in their early match versus the Warriors, hitting .353 (48K-12E-102TA) as a team behind efficient double-digit kill performances from junior outside hitter Reily Byxbee (Madison, Conn.) (13 kills) and freshman right side Lauren Lipinski (Gilbert, Ariz.) (10). Unfortunately, the Scarlet and Gold did not perform as well against AIC as the Yellow Jackets defeated Chestnut Hill College by a 3-1 (16-25, 25-13, 25-21, 25-19) final. Callahan was eventually recognized on the all-tournament team with 49.5 points (41 kills, 6 aces, 3 blocks), five assists, and 59 digs in four matches. She concluded the invitational with nine kills, two aces, nine digs, and two blocks versus Merrimack College, and a career-high 18 kills, an assist, an ace, and 13 digs versus AIC.
