Winn’s Week Warrants Mention On CACC Softball Honor Roll
New Haven, Conn. – (4/8/2019) – In addition to recording her 100th collegiate hit in game two of Chestnut Hill College’s doubleheader at Caldwell University on Sunday, April 8, senior third baseman Lily Winn (Los Angeles, Calif.) batted .485 (16-for-33) with eight runs, four runs-batted-in, and a stolen base (1-for-1, 1.000) to earn a Honor Roll mention on this week’s Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Softball Report.
Chestnut Hill College (10-18, 5-9) fell to Georgian Court University in both games in Tuesday's CACC matchup at the campus softball field. In game one, the Griffins had a chance to overthrow the Lions, but in the seventh inning the visitor's made their move and ended the match 2-7. In game two, the Scarlet and Gold had a slight edge in the earlier innings but Georgian Court University's fourth inning runs secured the 4-12 final. Winn was 6-for-7 in the twin bill, scoring three runs and batting in a run in game one with her fifth-inning solo shot.
After losing game one, 6-3, on the account of a five-run fifth inning by Millersville University. Chestnut Hill College earned redemption with a 6-2 game-two victory over the Marauders. A sixth-inning, three-run home run by senior left fielder Ariel Magee (North Cape May, N.J.) solidified the victory, but a fifth-inning sacrifice fly from sophomore centerfielder Devon Horner (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) supplied the winning run. Senior catcher Brielle Riotte (Elizabeth. N.J.) was the only Griffin to record multiple hits (2-for-3) in the opener, contributing to two runs with a run-scoring double in the second inning and a tally in the seventh inning. In the nightcap, junior shortstop Alessandra Messina (Ambler, Pa.) (2-for-5) and Riotte (2-for-2) each recorded two hits, but it was Horner, Magee, and the Scarlet and Gold bullpen that ensured the split. Winn was 1-for-5 in the twin bill.
Chestnut Hill College fell to Wilmington University, 3-11 (6) and 0-8 (5), in Thursday's CACC matchup at Wilmington. Winn (2) and Messina (1) were the only Griffins to score; the former was 4-for-6 in the doubleheader, going 3-for-3 with two runs in the opener. Two days later, on Saturday, April 6, Chestnut Hill College used a seventh-inning sacrifice fly from Magee to win game two (W, 6-5) and split an afternoon doubleheader at Bloomfield College. Winn finished the doubleheader 2-for-7 with two runs and two RBI.
On Sunday, April 7, Chestnut Hill College collected a valuable CACC win with their 7-4 game-one win at Caldwell University, but were left to celebrate the 100th-career hit for Winn in the game two as the Cougars split the twin bill with their 12-8 victory. Winn contributed to a four-run fourth inning that won the opener and recorded her 100th collegiate hit with a double in the third inning of game two; the extra-base hit knocked in the second Griffin run of the affair and helped them tie the contest at 4-4. Unfortunately, Caldwell University reciprocated with two runs in the bottom of the inning, 6-4, and outscored the Scarlet and Gold 6-4 the rest of the way in a 12-8 final.
