Wildcats Overwhelm Griffins In Women’s Volleyball

New Castle, DE - (10/28/10) – Wilmington University defeated Chestnut Hill College, 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-16) in this evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match to sweep the season series. The Griffins gave their best effort in the opening set; trailing 14-12 before the Wildcats closed the frame with an 11-6 run.

 

Wilmington University (18-10, 12-4) carried a narrow lead midway through the opening set, as sophomore right side Madelynn Ries (Antananarivo, Madagascar) powered the Chestnut Hill College (4-22, 1-14) early in the match. The Griffins trailed by two as late as 14-12, but sophomore outside hitter Nicole Wiechecki (Wilmington, DE) and the Wildcats separated for a 25-18 win before taking the next two sets 25-11 and 25-16.

 

Wiechecki headlined the Wildcats performance with 12 kills and a .458 (12K-1E-24TA) hitting percentage. She was supported by senior setter Christina Lessard (Dover, DE) and freshman setter Rhianon Graham (Claymont, DE) who supplied 18 assists and 11 assists respectively. They each recorded three aces as well. Senior outside hitter Meghan Frick (Fairfax, VA) made 12 digs and junior libero Kim Shropshire (Wilmington, DE) made ten digs to lead the Wildcats defensively.

 

Ries finished with five kills, but it was sophomore middle hitter Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA) who led the Griffin frontline with seven kills and four blocks. Ries made two blocks. Sophomore setter Courtney Gallo (Wilmington, DE) provided 11 assists and freshman setter Allison Eberly (Orwigsburg, PA) added seven more. Defensively, sophomore libero Elisabeth DiGregorio (Conshohocken, PA) led the Griffins with 20 digs, junior defensive specialist Alyssa Miller (East Stroudsburg, PA) made 11 digs.

 

The women's volleyball team returns home to host Concordia College in a 12:00 p.m. CACC match on Saturday, October 30.
