Women’s Tennis Takes Tight Loss to Tigers

10/6/2010 10:33:42 PM

Philadelphia, PA – (10/6/2010) – Two of the top women's tennis programs of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) met today as Chestnut Hill College hosted Holy Family University in an afternoon match. The Griffins won the premier matches in both singles and doubles action, but the Tigers took all but one of the remaining matches to earn the victory, 5-3.

Sophomore Nastia Shcherbakova (Minsk, Belarus) and freshman Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, OH) gave Chestnut Hill College (6-5, 4-3) their top effort at number one singles and number one doubles. Doubles play led-off the afternoon, with Shcherbakova and Dennis scoring an 8-5 win at number one doubles. Unfortunately, Holy Family University (7-1, 4-1) took the 2-1 advantage into singles action with wins of 9-8 (8-6) and 8-0 at number two and three doubles, respectively.

Shcherbakova looked to motivate the Griffins as play changed formats. She topped sophomore Jin Querbin (Mississauga, Ontario) 6-1, 6-3 at number one singles. Dennis fought hard in a match with sophomore Juliana Victoria (Guayaquil, Ecuador) at number two singles. Victoria took the first set 6-1, Dennis recovered with a 6-3 win in the second set, but Victoria denied the Griffins any momentum with a 6-1 win in the third set. Sophomore Maria Parapouras (Victoria, Australia) would win the only other point for Chestnut Hill College with a 7-5, 6-2 win at number three singles. Sophomore Danielle Knott (Mt. Vernon, NY) was leading junior Linda Piecyk (Philadelphia, PA) 6-2, 4-5, before number four singles was left unfinished due to inclement weather. The Tigers completed the 5-3 win with victories of 6-1, 6-1, and 7-5, 6-3, at number five and six singles, respectively.

The women's tennis team breaks from their CACC schedule for a 4:00 p.m. match at St. Thomas Aquinas College on Friday, September 8.
