Griffins’ Last Shot Rims Out At Felician College

Rutherford, NJ – (2/18/2010) – In the final 30 seconds, Chestnut Hill College hit back-to-back three-point baskets to bring the Griffins within a point of Felician College, 70-69. Following a made Golden Falcon free throw, a 12-foot jumper form senior guard Julian McFadden (Philadelphia, PA) went in-and-out to end the Griffins' comeback as time ran out. The Golden Falcons held on for a 71-69 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory.

Chestnut Hill College (10-13, 6-8) owned a 31-28 halftime lead and improved their advantage to ten, 44-34, early in the second half (16:56) behind the inside play of sophomore forward Dan Comas (Philadelphia, PA) and the shooting of sophomore guard Ryan Cook (Laurel, MD). Comas totaled nine points and five rebounds by halftime and Cook scored ten of his 17 points in the closing period. Led by sophomore guard Antoine Obery (Roselle, N.J.), Felician College (19-5, 12-3) responded with 19-9 run to bring the conference rivals even, 53-53, with 8:10 left in the contest. The Griffins briefly regained the upper hand, but with the supportive play of sophomore forward Andrew August (Bridgewater, N.J.) and junior guard Ryan Moseley (Teaneck, N.J.), Obery and the Golden Falcons eventually staked a seven-point lead, 70-63, with 26 seconds remaining. In that time, the Griffins still managed to make it a dramatic finish, as graduate forward Larz Jeter (Philadelphia, PA) and freshman guard Mark DiRugeris Jr. (Woodbury, NJ) drilled back-to-back three-point baskets to place the Griffins down one, 70-69, with 11 seconds to play. Junior forward Suquan Gary (Paterson, N.J.) hit the second of two free throws to make it a 2-point game, 71-69, before McFadden's last second jumper refused to clear the net.

Obery finished with a double-double, 14 points and 14 rebounds, to lead the Golden Falcons. August led the home team in scoring and defense with 17 points and three steals. Two others reached double digits for Felician College; Gary and Moseley each chipped 11 points. Gary also grabbed six rebounds, while Moseley made a block and a steal in addition to serving as the Golden Falcons' outside threat (3-of-4, 75.0% 3PT). Junior guard Devon Young (Monmouth Junction, N.J.) provided six assists.

Comas anchored the Griffins in the paint with 15 points and 13 rebounds in the affair, his eighth double-double of the season. He was efficient hitting 6-of-9 (66.7%) from the floor and 3-of-4 (75.0%) at the free throw line. Cook finished with 17 points on 6-of-10 (60.0%) shooting, he hit 2-of-5 (40.0%) from long range and 3-of-6 (50.0%) at the free throw line. DiRugeris added nine points to the Griffins second-half effort. All of his field goals coming from behind the three-point arc and he also hit 3-of-4 (75.0%) at the line to finish the contest with 12 points. Jeter totaled nine points and seven rebounds, and freshman guard Francis Ashe (Greenbelt, MD) supplied eight points and seven assists at the point.

The men's basketball team next visits Concordia College as they continue their CACC schedule with a 3:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, February 20.
