Comas’ Career Night Brings Griffins Playoff Berth With Overtime Triumph

Philadelphia, PA – (2/21/2010) – Chestnut Hill College outscored the University of the Sciences 14-6 in the extra period to collect a key win toward their pursuit of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament berth. The Griffins won the contest 73-65 on the shoulders of sophomore forward Dan Comas (Philadelphia, PA) who had a career-night with 33 points and 18 rebounds. The win clinches the Griffins for post-season play; they will occupy the third seed in the CACC South Division.

The University of the Sciences (7-17, 4-10) held a 35-26 halftime advantage outshooting the Griffins 46.2% (12-of-26) to 30.8% (12-of-39) in the opening period. Comas scored 17 points and harnessed 12 rebounds in the second half to direct Chestnut Hill College (10-14, 6-9) on a critical comeback. The Griffins forced the Devils to foul as the Griffins made 29 trips to the charity stripe in the final 25 minutes. Comas was 11-of-15 (73.3%) from the line and the Griffins made 21-of-29 (72.4%) as a team, helping them grab their first lead with just over two minutes remaining in overtime. The Griffins pulled away in the final minutes as the Devils went 2-of-8 (25.0%) from the floor and 2-of-6 (33.3%) in the extra frame.

Junior forward Adewale Adefemi (Chesilhurst, N.J.) had a double-double by halftime (10 points and 10 rebounds, and he to lead the Devils with 22 points and 15 rebounds in the contest. He was supported by freshman guard William Kernan (Medford, N.J.) who supplied 15 points, ten rebounds, five assists, a block, and two steals. Freshman guard Matt Whitworth (Ocean City, N.J.) chipped in with 12 points and senior forward Curtis Fitch (N. Grosvenordale, Conn.) provided eight points and four blocks.

Comas was 11-of-14 (78.6%) from the floor and added 11 free throws for his game-high 33 points. His 18 rebounds is a College record and brings him to ten double-doubles on the year. Comas also recorded a block and two steals defensively. Freshman guard Mark DiRugeris Jr. (Woodbury, NJ) scored 14 points while sophomore guard Ryan Cook (Laurel, MD) and freshman guard Francis Ashe (Greenbelt, MD) gave versatile efforts. Cook totaled seven points, 11 rebounds, a block, and three steals. Ashe contributed eight points, four assists, four rebounds, and two steals.

The men's basketball team concludes their regular season with a 3:00 p.m. contest against Wilmington University on, Saturday, February 21. The Griffins will recognize their senior class in their final home contest.
