Women’s Volleyball Loses To Lions in Conference Encounter

9/15/2010 12:00:29 AM

Philadelphia, PA – (9/14/2010) – This evening opened on a positive note as Chestnut Hill College challenged Georgian Court University to 25-23 final in the first game. Unfortunately the Lions used their poor, first-game play as motivation for a 3-0 (25-23, 25-12, 25-15) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over the Griffins. Sophomore middle hitter Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA) and freshman middle hitter Mary Markowski (Parkton, MD) led the Griffin attack with eight and five kills, respectively.

Benson and Markowski powered Chestnut Hill College (0-7, 0-2) to a 21-20 advantage in the opening game. However, a Georgian Court University (1-8, 1-0) timeout cooled the Griffins and allowed the Lions to recover for a 25-23 win. Benson and Markowski combined for five kills and a .286 (5K-1E-14TA) hitting percentage in the game. Freshman outside hitter Alex DePalma (Shillington, PA) added two aces as did freshman setter Allison Eberly (Orwigsburg, PA), who also supplied three assists. Unfortunately, the Lions carried the momentum for 25-12 and 25-15 victories in the final two games.

Benson led the Griffins with eight kills on a .353 (8K-2E-17TA) hitting percentage; she also made two blocks defensively. Markowski hit .455 (5K-0E-11TA) and totaled five kills in the match. DePalma finished with five aces to bring her season total to seven. Eberly teamed with sophomore setter Courtney Gallo (Wilmington, DE) for 13 assists. Sophomore libero Elisabeth DiGregorio (Conshohocken, PA) made 12 digs in the loss.

The women's volleyball team continues their CACC schedule with a trip to Goldey-Beacom College for a 7:00 p.m. contest on Thursday, September 16.
