Monroeville, PA – (10/1/2011) – The women's tennis team suffered their first loss of the 2011-2012 season this afternoon, with an 8-1 loss against Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). Junior
Nastia Shcherbakova (Minsk, Belarus) claimed Chestnut Hill College's lone point with a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 victory at number one singles. The Griffins won yesterday's match at Shippensburg University 8-1, only losing at number six singles.
Shcherbakova led Chestnut Hill College (8-1) in today's match against IUP. She took the first set of number one singles 6-2, before allowing sophomore Tabtip Louhabanjong (Krabi, Thailand) to even the match in the second set, 6-2. Shcherbakova claimed the point with a 7-5 win in the tie-breaking set. Unfortunately, the Crimson Hawks were victorious at all the remaining individual match after sweeping doubles play for the 8-1 win.
At Shippensburg University (0-2), the Griffins scored an 8-1 win; sweeping doubles play and winning all but number six singles. Shcherbakova and sophomore
Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, OH) won number one doubles 8-1 to set the tone. Junior
Maria Parapouras (Victoria, Australia) and freshman
Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburg, PA) followed suit at number two doubles, 8-5, while junior
Danielle Knott (Mt. Vernon, NY) and freshman
Alexis Puhl (Philadelphia, PA) teamed for an 8-0 win at number three doubles. All but Puhl played and scored individual wins in singles play.
The women's tennis team continues their break from Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play with a 2:30 p.m. home match against Rider University on Thursday, October 6.
