Orangeburg, NY – (2/12/2011) – A second straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest came down to the final seconds and once again junior guard Uros Kovacevic (Kotor, Montenegro) came to the rescue for Chestnut Hill College. The affair was 40 minutes of fierce competition, which left the Chargers clinging to a late 62-61 advantage. With only six seconds remaining, Kovacevic scored his second game-winning bucket in as many games landing the Griffins a 63-62 triumph. The victory matches the Griffins highest CACC-win total and evens their league record at 7-7.
Dominican College (14-11, 10-5) owned the largest lead of the opening half, 34-30, with 4:09 left in the period. Sophomore guard Francis Ashe (Greenbelt, MD) and junior center Dan Comas (Philadelphia, PA) spurred Chestnut Hill College (10-12, 7-7) on a late run knotting the contest 38-38 heading to intermission. The second half was played just as tight, again leaving the Chargers to a late 62-61 lead. Kovacevic shouldered the Griffins' last chance. With six seconds left and no room for error, he successfully completed a last-second strike recording his second consecutive game winner and the Griffins' tenth victory of the season.
The Chargers were led by senior center Almin Hodzic (Budd Lake, NJ) who totaled 15 points, 13 rebounds, and five blocks. Sophomore guard Leon Porter (Laurel, MD) supplied nine points, eight rebounds, and five assists to play his roll at point, while freshman guard Khaleev Ginyard (Brentwood, NY) and sophomore center Cory Quimby (Otisville, NY) each contributed 12 points. Quimby also grabbed seven rebounds.
Junior guard Brandon Williams (Philadelphia, PA) was the Griffins' top scorer with 15 points. Comas offered 12 points, three blocks, and a steal to the triumphant effort, while Ashe finished the afternoon with 13 points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard Mark DiRugeris Jr. (Woodbury, NJ) tracked down seven rebounds in addition to dishing out three assists. Kovacevic finished with seven points.
The men's basketball travels to Wilmington University for their next CACC contest, an 8:00 p.m. contest on Tuesday, February 15.
