Women’s Tennis Closes Season with Win over Devils

Philadelphia, PA – (4/18/2011) – The women's tennis team concluded their 2010-2011 schedule this afternoon, as Chestnut Hill College hosted the University of the Sciences (USciences) in a non-conference match while recognizing Sarah Doherty (Southampton, PA) in a brief Senior Day ceremony. The Griffins carried a 2-1 lead into singles action and defeated the Devils by a 6-3 margin.
 
As always, Chestnut Hill College (13-9) was strong at the top, winning the top two doubles matches and the top four individual matches. Sophomore Nastia Shcherbakova (Minsk, Belarus) and freshman Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, OH) won number one doubles 8-2 while sophomores Maria Parapouras (Victoria, Australia) and Danielle Knott (Mt. Vernon, NY) took number two doubles 8-0. USciences (2-8) ruined the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win at number three doubles.
 
With a 2-1 lead, the Griffins used their advantage to muscle USciences in singles play. Shcherbakova set the tone with a 6-2, 6-1 win at number one singles and the next three matches followed in similar fashion. Dennis took number two singles 6-1, 6-0, Parapouras won number three singles 6-0, 6-0, and Knott claimed number four singles 6-1, 6-1. Despite a strong effort, Doherty dropped number five singles 6-3, 7-5, while her sister, sophomore Regina Doherty (Southampton), lost number six singles 6-4, 6-1.
 
The women's tennis team finishes the 2010-2011 season at 13-9 overall and 5-3 in the CACC, while holding a #8 ranking in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region.
