Philadelphia, PA – (9/3/2011) – The 2011-2012 Chestnut Hill College women's tennis season got underway today with a home match against Molloy College. The Griffins swept doubles play to carry a 3-0 lead into singles action where they completed the shutout, 9-0. The Lions gave their strongest showing in the top individual flight, as junior Jeana Frey (Island Park, NY) and junior
Nastia Shcherbakova (Minsk, Belarus) battled through three tight sets.
Doubles play went quickly with Chestnut Hill College (1-0) winning the top two matches and claiming the third by default. Shcherbakova and Dennis took care of business at number one doubles with an 8-2 win, while junior
Maria Parapouras (Victoria, Australia) and freshman
Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburg, PA) teamed for an 8-0 triumph at number two doubles. The Griffins won the third team flight by default.
Singles play went just as smoothly except for the number one matchup. Shcherbakova would need to rally from a 6-3 loss in the opening set in order to defeat Frey. She came through with a 6-4 win in the second set to even the score and then finished off the shutout with a 12-10 win in the deciding frame.
The women's tennis team opens their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule with their next contest; a 4:00 p.m. home match against Philadelphia University on Wednesday, September 7.
