Lions Edge Griffins in Epic CACC Engagement

Box Score Lakewood, N.J. – (10/23/2012) – A marathon match awaited Chestnut Hill College at Georgian Court University, as the Griffins and Lions tangled for five sets of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) competition. The Lions came through on their home court to win the match 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 14-25, 25-18, and 17-15). The Griffins won the opening set 25-23 only to drop the second set by the same score. They won the third set 25-14 on stellar offensive teamwork, but lost the final two sets 25-18 and 17-15.
 
Chestnut Hill College (8-18, 4-11) struck without error in the opening set as they hit .375 (13K-0E-24 TA) for a 25-23 victory. Georgian Court University (13-13, 10-5) matched the Griffins with a 25-23 win in the second set, but the Griffins outdid their own effort in the third set by hitting .462 (14K-2E-26) for a commanding 25-14 win. Unfortunately, the Lions rallied behind their home crowd to win the fourth set 25-18 and a highly-competitive deciding set 17-15.
 
Senior outside hitter Amy Berry (Bayville, N.J.) and Jhoan Agosto Rivera (Carolina, Puerto Rico) each recorded 16 kills to top the Lion attack. Both chipped in defensively as well, Berry offering eight digs and three blocks while Rivera made two blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Tahiana Villariny Rodriguez (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) contributed on both sides of the net with 15 kills and three blocks. Senior middle hitter Maria Antimisiaris (Chania, Crete) did the same with four aces, eight digs, and four blocks. Anchoring the Lion effort, sophomore setter Jaslene Lopez (Coamo, Puerto Rico) made 51 assists and two blocks while sophomore defensive specialist Francheska Cedres (Carolina, Puerto Rico) totaled 24 digs.
 
Chestnut Hill College was led by freshman outside hitter Abby Gruver (Coplay, Pa.), who killed 13 balls on a .278 (13K-3E-36TA) hitting percentage en route to her fourth double-double performance of the season. She totaled 15 digs and additionally supplied two aces and two blocks. Her classmate, middle hitter Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.) and sophomore right side Kaitlyn Schock (Allentown, Pa.) both recorded ten kills. On defense, Schock made five blocks and Biro made four. A the point for the Griffin offense senior setter Courtney Gallo (Wilmington, Del.) distributed 26 assists while hustling to eight digs. Junior middle hitter Mary Markowski (Parkton, Md.) recorded a career-high nine blocks in the match.
 
The women's volleyball team returns home to host Philadelphia University in a 5:00 p.m. match on Friday, October 26.
