Griffins and Lady Rams Crash Before the Storm in CACC Quarterfinals

10/28/2012 3:28:00 PM

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. – (10/28/2012) – Reflecting the approach of Hurricane Sandy, today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Quarterfinal women's soccer game was clam before the storm as #7 Chestnut Hill College and #2 Philadelphia University remained scoreless after 72:00 minutes of play. With a flurry of goals the contest was left to a 2-1 Lady Ram victory. The Lady Rams will advance to play in the CACC Semifinals which will be hosted at Post University in Waterbury, Connecticut, starting on Thursday, November 1.

Despite a 29-5 final shooting edge for the Lady Rams, the Griffins defense forced many shots high and wide until a late charge gave the Lady Rams a 2-1 victory. The Lady Rams struck first on their home field with a dump-and-chip attack from senior forward Trisha Sileo (Islip, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Janine Cascio (Kings Park, N.Y.) at 72:35, 1-0. The Lady Ram advantage was short-lived as a centering pass from junior forward Kaelyn Pizarro (Berlin N.J.) became a sliding score from junior midfielder Carly DiGiovanni (Seaville N.J) that brought the Griffins even at 75:19, 1-1. The new stalemate lasted less than four minutes; unfortunately it was the Lady Rams who scored at 79:07, when sophomore defender Meagan Yates (Limerick, Pa.) found junior forward Kristen Ferguson (Haddonfield, N.J.) for the game-winning-goal, 2-1.

Ferguson was the focus of the Lady Ram offense as she struck a game-high eight shots toward senior goalkeeper Jessica Veazey (Middletown, Del.). Veazey made nine stops, but earned the loss (7-10) in today's quarterfinal contest. Senior goalkeeper Kelli Kowalewski (Shamong, N.J.) made the one save she needed to make just before halftime as she earned the win for the Lady Rams. DiGiovanni recorded two of the Griffins five shots, Pizarro, junior forward Marykate McShane (Lebanon, Pa.), and freshman midfielder Danielle Spinuzza (Williamstown, N.J.) accounted for the other Griffin strikes.

The Chestnut Hill College women's soccer team finishes the 2012 season, their second under Head Coach Sandy Dickson, with their fourth consecutive CACC Championship Tournament appearance and an 8-11 overall record (7-5 CACC).
