Griffins End Season With Senior Day Victory Over Deacons

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. – (11/3/2012) – Following annual Senior Day recognition, Chestnut Hill College ended the 2012 season on a positive note with a 3-1 (25-13, 24-26, 25-17, 25-19)  win over their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rival Bloomfield College in four sets. Junior outside hitter Alexandra DePalma (Shillington, Pa) topped the box score with an impressive 14-kill, 16-dig performance. Prior to today's match, in annual Senior Day tradition, the Chestnut Hill College Department of Athletics and Recreation recognized the senior members of the women's volleyball team; setter Courtney Gallo (Wilmington Del.) and middle hitter Cassie Benson (Rosamond, Calif.).
 
The first set was a battle until Chestnut Hill College (9-21, 5-14) pulled away from a 6-6 tie to a 25-13 win on strong service from freshmen, outside hitter Abby Gruver (Coplay, Pa.) and libero Deanna Bianchini (Blue Bell, Pa.). The second set was never separated by more than three points and was tied as late as 24-24, before Bloomfield College (4-17, 3-16) stole the win on a kill from senior outside hitter Da'Cheray Thomas (Newark, N.J.), 26-24. The Griffins would not allow their seniors to leave the on a loss and took control of the match for good with a 25-17 win as they paced the Deacons after rallying from a 6-2 deficit. Taking a comfortable 2-1 lead in the match, the Griffins were up against a determined Deacons squad in the fourth set. Tied at 18-18, the spotlight was on Gruver's serve. She came through on six straight serves to bring the Griffins a comfortable 24-19 lead, before DePalma finished the game on a set from sophomore setter Alyssa Tamsing (Ventura, Calif.), 25-19.
 
Thomas was the Deacons top performer with 16 kills and 12 digs. Her offensive production was complimented by sophomore outside hitter Deandra Black (East Brunswick, N.J.), who totaled 13 kills and supported by a combined 37 assists from sophomore setter Karol Oliveros (Newark, N.J.) and senior setter Allison Hart (Newark, N.J.).
 
DePalma's sixth double-double of the season was the one of the benefits of 18 assists from Tamsing and 17 assists from Gallo. In addition, freshman middle hitter Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.) had nine kills while Gruver and Gallo each served for three aces. Bianchini totaled 12 digs. Gallo finishes her collegiate career as the Griffins all-time leader in assists with 997 while Benson made her first and last appearance of the season in the first set. She recorded two blocks to finish her collegiate career as the Griffins all-time leader in kills (518), solo blocks (89), and total blocks (191) at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II level.

The women's volleyball team concludes their 2012 season at 9-21 overall and 5-14 in the CACC.
