Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. – (12/1/2012) – Chestnut Hill College opened their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule this afternoon with some of the league's top competition. The Griffins led Bloomfield College twice in the first half, but the Deacons pulled away for an 11-point lead before halftime, 44-33, and held the Griffins off in the second half for a 90-75 victory. Junior forward Kevin Udo (West Orange, N.J.) was a force in the paint for the Deacons, he finished with 26 points, nine rebounds, five blocks, and two steals. His opposite, sophomore center
Seamus Radtke (Philadelphia, Pa.), was the Griffins top performer with his first career double-double.
Play was tight early on with Bloomfield College (4-3, 2-0) building a five-point lead, 11-6 (15:51) and Chestnut Hill College (3-4, 0-1) responding to control a four-point lead of their own, 20-16, just before the 11-minute mark (11:05). Sophomore forward
Alssene Saintilus (Irvington, N.J.) led the Griffin attack, but Udo and the Deacons would not go easily. He kept them close while senior forward Jon Bradley (Jersey City, N.J.) delivered them the lead at 5:54, 28-27. He scored on the Deacons next possession, 30-27, and from there the visitors ran away to a 44-33 halftime advantage. Senior guard
Mark DiRugeris Jr. (Woodbury, N.J.) cut the Deacon lead to six, 46-40, soon after the break (18:26) with a traditional three-point basket and a four-point play, but the deficit hovered there until the final five minutes. A pair of Radtke free throws left the Deacons up five, 71-66, with 5:42 remaining, but clutch play of junior guard Dondre Whitmore (Trenton, N.J.) denied the Griffin rally anymore progress as he shot and passed the visitors to a 15-point win, 90-75.
Udo was 11-of-16 (68.6%) from the floor and 4-of-5 (80.0%) from the free throw line in his game-high scoring performance. Whitmore complimented Udo's play with five points, nine rebounds, 11 assists, and five steals as the Deacons point man. Three others finished in double figures; sophomore guard Marvin Williams (Jersey City, N.J.) and junior guard Terry Hicks (Neptune, N.J.) scored 13 apiece while sophomore guard Matt Hall (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded 12 points.
Radtke contributed 15 points and ten rebounds in his double-double performance. Saintilus finished with 14 points, DiRugeris totaled 11 points, and senior guard
Francis Ashe (Hyattsville, Md.) was a factor on both ends of the floor with seven assists and three blocks.
The men's basketball team looks to even their CACC record with a 6:00 p.m. contest at Wilmington University on Tuesday, December 4.
