Storm Washes Out Griffins in Final Quarter

Painesville, OH – (4/28/2012) – In this afternoon's contest, a fourth-quarter run led Lake Erie College to a 19-13 East Coast Conference (ECC) win over Chestnut Hill College. The Storm built on a narrow third-quarter lead, 13-11, with seven straight scores, overcoming the Griffins and a six-point performance from sophomore attack Mike Melnychenko (St. Catharines, Ontario).
 
Chestnut Hill College (7-6, 4-5) dictated play early in the affair with Melnychenko and freshman midfielder Chris Mertens (Freeport, NY) powering the Griffins to a 5-2 first-quarter advantage. After an opening tally from Lake Erie College (6-6, 3-5) at 14:41, 1-0, Melnychenko scored his first goal at 12:30 to even score at 1-1. Following another Storm goal at 12:18, 2-1, and a strike from junior attack Craig Owen (Glenolden, PA) at 10:29, 2-2, Mertens netted two goals in a row, scoring his first off the feed from junior defenseman Joe Rucinsky (Camp Hill, PA) during a man-up opportunity at 8:51, 3-2, and his second came from sophomore defenseman Chris Schaffer (Lititz, PA) at 5:24, 4-2. With the lead in hand a late first-quarter, man-up goal (4:12) from Melnychenko made it 5-2, Griffins, heading to the second period. The Storm reciprocated in the second frame, using a 7-4 swing to even the contest 9-9 heading to halftime. Following intermission, junior attack Keegan Bal (Coquitlam, British Columbia) led the Storm to a 13-11 edge by the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Trevor Tarte (Amherstburg, Ontario) sparked a 7-0 Storm run, scoring at 12:22, 14-12, and 11:41, 16-12, before the contest came to a close on a 19-13 final.
 
Tarte totaled six goals to lead the Storm. Ball finished with four points on three goals and an assist, while sophomore midfielder Reagan Harding (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) scored twice and helped the Storm keep possession with ten face-off victories (10-of-16, .625) and seven ground balls. Junior goalkeeper Alexander Wisner (Sylvania, Ohio) made 14 saves in the win (4-5).
 
Melnychenko recorded his fifth six-point performance of the season with five goals and an assist. He also recovered five ground balls and caused a turnover. Owen supported Melnychenko with two goals, a ground ball, and a caused turnover. Schaffer and junior midfielder Tom Carfagna (Laurys Station, PA) led the Griffins defensive unit. Schaffer caused three turnovers and controlled three ground balls in addition to his assist while Carfagna won three face-offs (3-of-5, .600), caused two turnovers, and hustled to five ground balls. In goal, junior goalkeeper Dakota Maurer (Lititz, PA) took the loss (7-6), despite 17 saves and a ground ball.
 
The men's lacrosse team concludes their 2012 schedule at the Plymouth Whitemarsh High School Football Stadium with a 12:00 p.m. ECC contest against C.W. Post University on Saturday, May 5.
