Griffins Scare Wolves from Sorgenti

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. – (9/13/2012) – Junior middle hitter Mary Markowski (Parkton, Md.) clogged the middle of the court and helped sophomore setter Alyssa Tamsing (Ventura, Calif.) direct Chestnut Hill College to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-8) home victory over Cheyney University. The women's volleyball team hit .345 (16K-6E-29TA) in the opening set, and .308 (37K-13E-78TA) in the match, while using 12 team aces to facilitate the win.
 
Markowski scored the first point for Chestnut Hill College (4-6), who led 14-7, before Cheyney University (1-3) slowed the Griffin attack. The wolves cut the gap to 15-10, but on the serve of junior outside hitter Alexandra DePalma (Shillington, Pa.) the Griffins regained control of the set to score a 25-12 victory. The Griffins looked to run away with the second set, streaking to an 8-0 lead before a Cheyney University timeout. Following the break the Wolves got as close as five, 9-4, before another run of serves from Tamsing and DePalma carried the Griffins to a 25-9 win. Tamsing got the Griffins off to a strong start in the third set, serving seven straight Griffin points for an 8-1 advantage. Freshman libero Deanna Bianchini (Blue Bell, Pa.) mirrored her effort and the end of the set, serving five straight points to help bring about a 25-8 closing set and the 3-0 victory.
 
Junior middle blocker Denise Hill (Allentown, Pa.) led the Wolves with three kills, an ace, and two blocks. She was supported by five assists, five digs, and two blocks from senior setter Crystal Mann (Burtonsville, Md.).
 
For the Griffins, Markowski finished with 11 kills on a .476 (11K-1E-21TA) hitting percentage while also recording three blocks. DePalma contributed ten kills in addition to her six aces and three digs. Tamsing offered 32 assists, two aces, and six digs, while Bianchini recorded three aces and six digs.
 
The women volleyball remains home to host a tri-match this Saturday, September 15. The Griffins welcome Nyack College to campus for an 11:00 a.m. non-conference match, before closing the afternoon with a 3:00 p.m. match against Dowling College.
