Last Second Corner Separates Lions From Griffins

9/26/2012 12:19:00 AM

Box Score Lakewood, N.J. – (9/25/2012) – Chestnut Hill College clawed their way back into this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest at Georgian Court University only to have the Lions capture a 4-3 victory on a last-second corner kick opportunity. With 12 seconds remaining in the affair, freshman midfielder Tori Capestro (Brick, N.J.) headed in the game-winning goal for the Lions. The Griffins were led by the aggressive play of junior midfielder Carly DiGiovanni (Seaville, N.J.) and junior forward Kaelyn Pizarro (Berlin, N.J.).

Georgian Court University (6-2-1, 5-1) struck first, scoring just six minutes (6:03) into the contest on a connection between Capestro and sophomore midfielder Carleigh Gorman (Mullica Hill, N.J.), 1-0. A little more than 20 minutes later (27:12), the Lions scored again, this time on a direct kick from junior defender Farrell Pomponio (Tuckerton, N.J.), 2-0. Fortunately, Chestnut Hill College (3-6, 3-2) answered just past the 30-minute mark (30:42) on a DiGiovanni penalty kick, 2-1, to cut into the Lions lead before halftime. After the break, sophomore midfielder Katherine Williams (Pennsauken, N.J.) found Pizarro for a chip over the Lion goalkeeper to bring all things even at 67:14, 2-2. The Lions regained the lead in the 73rd minute (72:28), separating for a 3-2 advantage on a corner kick hook up between junior defender Elizabeth Lawler (Forked River, N.J.) and graduate midfielder Tara Torisi (Freehold, N.J.). DiGiovanni knotted the contest back up at 3-3 only four minutes later (78:58), when Pizarro gathered the ball from a scrum and set her up for her second goal of the afternoon. Unfortunately, the bounces went the Lions way in the final seconds to send the Griffins home empty handed.

In goal, freshman Casey O'Connor (Toms River, N.J.) earned the win (6-2-1) for Lions without recording a save as the Griffins made good use of their three shots (17-3 Lions). Senior goalkeeper Jessica Veazey (Middletown, Del.) made four saves in the losing effort (2-5) for the Griffins.

The women's soccer team hosts Bloomfield College for their next CACC contest. A 1:00 p.m. kickoff is scheduled for Saturday, September 29.
